Ok thanks. So when it pops open some of the veil gets stuck to the top and stays white like that? Very interesting. Thanks for the info

Look at this chunky Boi,don't know what it is but it's one of the biggest i've seen. Cap was over 300mm easy
On size alone I'd guess Phlebopus marginatus, did it have pores or gills?
Another day looking for a patch to call my own. Found a few classic "wild" subs with the darker brown, umbonate cap and spindly stipe in a reserve in the North-East. Funnily enough, 100m away in the carpark I found a much more impressive patch of "woodchip" subs with pale caramel, conical caps and thick stipes.
So far this season, my experience can be summed up:
Open forest / reserve - present 1/3 attempts, low yields Pine forest - 1/2, low yields Woodchip - 3/3, high yields
I feel like a lot of the reserves I'm going to have been picked dry, since I'll find maybe 1-2 specimens per area after spending a good time looking. With the woodchips, you don't find the subs, the subs find you!

I hope you don’t intend to keep the black ones at the bottom of the pic, they look a little too far gone.. Also in the top row, I believe the one in the middle and to the far left could be L.ceres.

Hey all,
Long time lurker, new poster. Hope the season is going well for you.
I've just come back to Melbourne from an extended stay in SW Vic. It took a while but the massive pine plantations between Portland and Nelson fruited last week. I got 1 KG fresh in a couple of hours in an area with immature pine trees; I think they were regrowing after a bushfire in 2016 and so there were plenty of old fallen rotting logs for the subs to devour . Unfortunately I had to return to Melbourne before I could pick another 10 kilos but now I know the spot I'll be back next year, it took a fair bit of trekking & bushwalking as well as patience to hit paydirt. But now I have my spot, unless the logging trucks roll in. The season starts later down there, I didn't know that vital information.

I came back to Melbourne and checked my parkland haunts, one was Mother Hubbard bare. Someone must have got in first. Finders keepers, no worries. At my second creekside spot I got a small handful, I was happy with that.
Then I strolled back to my parked car, for some reason I decided to take a slightly different route and walked round the block. I wasn't on the hunt but out of the corner of my eye I noticed a sub on this little tanbark fence edging on a corner block. It was a failry newbuild McUnit with that really dark heavy peaty tanbark the builders lay. I knelt down and there they were - big juicy mature specimens all in a one spot, no more than 2m x 1m square. So many people must have passed by...... I got 200g fresh in a couple of mins of frantic picking as dog walkers and neighbours wandered past :-) I left the pins for today or tomorrow. The unit was a street from the creekside, maybe that made the difference?
Happy hunting!

The real reason I came on here was to ask a question:
I'm going to go on a holiday at the Tarra Bulga National Park over Queen's Birthday holiday.
If you've never been I highly recommend it, it's one of the most beautiful places in Victoria. You can see mountain ash that predate European settlement and it is so lush and green . Lyrebirds walk right past you. You can drink from the streams (and get bitten by myriad leeches)-
https://www.visitvictoria.com/regions/gippsland/things-to-do/nature-and-wildlife/national-parks-and-reserves/vv-tarra-bulga-national-park.
And - it is also surrounded by great big pine plantations. Has anyone picked up there? Will it be too cold & possibly wet around the 8th June? It's bound to be chilly out there.
Thanks comrades

I was planning to go for a long stroll up and down Mt Dandy tmrw but youve changed my mind. I, too, have had trouble finding subs in open forest this year. I much prefer walking through the forest than having to snoop around through wood chips which is a shame but Im just not having much luck.

Completely agree with the previous statements. Had a good 30+ hours looking through forests, thousands of agrocybe, leratiomyces, etc. but zero subs.
No trouble finding them by accident in the suburbs though... Disappointing, as it is so peaceful to wander the forest looking in solitude.

I completely agree. This was one area I was going to keep to myself for the purpose of taking the best possible photos to post on Shroomery.
Seeing as I lost my phone and have no means of taking photos, I'll reveal the following:
Not so much in Melbourne city, but certainly around Melbourne city, the terrain is perfect to not only find subs but take incredible photos of the mushrooms with Melbourne city as the background.
Go to Chemist Warehouse in Southbank and it'll be obvious where to go in order to find subs. Just leave the pins and do your best to take the best possible photos of the mushrooms with Melbourne city as the background. Make taking photos your priority......
I hunted along the beach 3 - 4 days ago and was amazed at how easily I found subs. Few seem to check here because I found the mushrooms when I got near the beach and along the beach in the woodchip sections. Make sure you lift the sides of bushes and check there. If you go here, make sure you take the best possible photos of the mushrooms with the beach as the background. I think they'd look amaaaaaaazing.
Go out asap. Now's the time.....
I had such a good day hunting today and found an enormous cluster near a small swampy area, but I won't talk too much about it since I couldn't take photos.
Again, now's the time.
Have fun hunting and if you're hunting around the city or along the beach make sure you take the best possible photos....

I was going to post about the following when I had the book in front of me, but that might be a while and it seems that the sooner I make this post the better.
Like I mentioned several pages ago I took a Legal Studies class in high school, and one of the topics was law reform.
I mentioned how it's possible to get the law changed by going through the courts, but it's also possible to get it changed through defiance.
I had a look on the internet and there is next to no information about this, and it might be days if not weeks before I have my Legal Studies book in front of me.
So I'm just sticking to my word and providing the following information, that it is a recognised avenue of law reform to have laws changed through defiance.
How this relates, just pick whatever mushrooms you like as though it were legal without a care in the word. If asked, just state what you're doing, that you're not doing anything wrong and stick to the story no matter what happens. Do it right and the law could be changed.
Take it or leave it. I'm just providing the information I said I'd provide.

I woke up early this morning and went to see someone I know who has a camera that I can use. Whilst waiting for the camera to charge I did some hunting and found a new patch....
I found enough mushrooms for a few high doses. Only took a few photos because I had to be quick....
(I’m aware I’ve included the same photo twice. I’m using a phone to make this post and it would take way too long to edit so I’ll just leave it as is)

I’ll do my best to take the best possible photos for the rest of the season... All the photos I’ve ever posted on Shroomery have been taken by phone so I’m keen to finally use an actual camera..... See how I go.....
Happy hunting everyone

Whats the process of changing the law through defiance and have you any proof of your own success of this method?
Because tbh thats some poor advice if you dont have anything to back it up.
Imagine some gullible kid taking your advice, defying the pigs, and bam, ends up in the back of the divy for picking mushies. Flex on people with power, and they will use that power against you.
Take it from an anarchist. Theres a time and place for defiance.
Nothing but love brother.

Me & my pal Mr. Flicker had a look today, still a few good ones around the south eastern suburbs;
Hopefully more flushes come around after the coming rains.

Welcome to the Shroomery
Lots of people use defiance to try to change laws. Just think of all the 420 protests.
I haven’t successfully changed any laws, then again, I haven’t really tried all that hard to. It’s something I wouldn’t mind getting more into though.
Like I mentioned several pages ago, I did take a Legal Studies class ten years ago and that’s where I got the information about law reform from.
I called up the school I used to go to a few minutes ago and asked to speak with my old Legal Studies teacher just to find out what book we used and to ask him a few questions. When he calls me back I can provide more details.
