I've made some spore prints on paper from my find over the weekend. I'm heading out again tomorrow and I will take the prints with me and put them back in places where I found the subs. Do you folks think this is a good thing to do? I really want to preserve the site for future years as much as I can. I am already only picking subs that have fully opened gills and I am careful to not tread around to much unnecessarily. Is there anything else I can do to pick responsibly?

It would be better to spread the spores in locations they arent present. Sound like you are doing the right thing, you can also use scissors to cut the mushrooms off at the base.

Cheers for the quick response, I will add some scissors to the kit. Good idea to spread them around a bit more. I will put them in the same forest but in different spots.
I love how nice the prints look also.

I cut them up and made spore confetti to take with me tomorrow

I went hunting for the first time and found my first sub recently! I put the roots back into the soil and made spore prints to bring back to new locations.
I've since been 3 more times and looked around several hours in and around different pine plantations with no luck, it's insane to see some people are getting 50+. I was wondering if it's worth venturing deep into the pine forests or if I would have better luck sticking to more popular areas and thick grasses?
Even if I haven't had the most success, it's been great getting up early to walk through nature and educate myself some more. I love how knowledgeable and helpful this community is
Any advice is appreciated, good hunting guys!

After a dry spell of looking in well known spots, I went futher south of Meadows to a random eucalyptus forest and they were everywhere. I picked 20+ mature subs - with a lot more to be found. My first big find!
Advice for others also starting out - Plan your day with Google maps (satellite images, drop some pins - also handy to mark where you parked), ferns are your friends, don't be afraid to go out even if it hasn't rained for few days, look up sometimes and enjoy the scenery.

Ahhh dude yes!!! My brain is literally incapable of correctly triangulating my position almost ALL the time I'm in the forest lol. Especially on 6+ hour treks I am the definition of lost. Very good advice lol. My sense of orientation is so fucking bad its embarrassing but oh well.
I was alone in a pine forest pretty late at night once and a tree fell, literally right behind me. The sound of it terrified me and I fucking booked it out of there. But my phone had no reception cause I was in a valley, and it was pitch black, so I went 20 minutes in the wrong direction, deeper into the forest scared out of my mind hahaha damn. Being lost in a forest at night alone is pure fear fuel for your brain.

You can use a net bag instead of a paper bag to maybe increase spore spreading (idk how much diff it makes tho) i made this w a laundry bag and shoe laces lol

Spores also wash off plastic/silicone super easily, so I print on silpat mats but say, the inside of container lids, clingfilm even works, a malleable rubber place mat would work well. Anything you can collect spores on then wash off straight into a container is great. I did some on cling two days ago, wash the cling film off under running water into a jug, then I take a spray bottle of purple water with me when I hunt. I was wondering though of the efficacy of spreading spores, is it worth it? I don't have enough experience to know myself. And also is my method even better than the paper method?, or is the paper way better??

Last Friday some mates and I ventured out, and it was my second time having success. It ended up being a beautiful day after about midday.
There was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for sure.

Gorgeous pics and sentiment on this year's thread!
@Viexen, that's just lovely. I also went out Friday on the range in central norther with no luck. I did find a porcini patch so there was a silver lining.
@AlexanderLion somehow I have the opposite, I can't switch off the orientation part of my brain. I'll often head deep off any paths, wander up down across through etc., only to pop out exactly where my car is 3hrs later just by feel. But, holy smokes, your night experience lost, that'll def get the amygdala firing on ALL cylinders.
Will head out again this Friday, further south I reckon. Say gday if you're out an about.
Happy hunting.

Thanks for the info about spore water @Alexander Lion I will give that a go next time and take the purple water sprayer along I hope it helps, we have the right sentiment at least in wanting to preserve the areas and the spread the love.
Today I went back to the little forest near me that has given me so much already this season. There is heaps of pins again, each one I picked I found at least one pin, mostly more that I left behind. After a while my thumb and fore finger started to get sore from picking and i found myself leaving ones behind that I could have picked, leave them for the forest I thought.I'll have a decent callous by seasons end I think and a supply of anti depressant micro dose meds to last me a long while thankfully.
here are the best pics from the day

PS. I see a few folks asking about pine habbitat, this spot I have found this year is a medium age forest that is fairly open still, it has lots of grass, gorse bushes, bracken and clearings that have formed in the middle of the block. its only this one block that is abundant, the two blocks of pines either side of it are to densely packed with tall thin pines and there is not much action there. I didnt find a single sub in an hour or so of looking in the other blocks, the abundant one though and whithin 5 minutes I find them. So look for pines that allow the light in and look for some diversity. there are some good guides on here also that have served me well.

Damn nice finds people! And from new people too! This is a nice change from seasons past!
I finally got out to see what's going on at my local spot, only a few subs popping up so far but I was more interested in exploring than picking. I saw more pickers than subs! Also saw a bandicoot digging around which is a new one for me. Another area that looked great on google maps but when I got there there were signs of fire having gone through, long ago enough for the undergrowth to be fully recovered and quite a few inactives around, but I've never had any luck with subs where there's clear signs of a burnoff or fire and yesterday was no different.
The dehydrator is full of slipperies, after they're dried they seem to make a good substitute for dried porcini, not a fan of them fresh though. Still haven't found porcini but I haven't really made an effort to single them out, I have a fair idea of where to head for them but it hasn't been a priority for me this year, again.

If anyone wants to trek to the border, the area around Portland/Nelson was amazing last week in the pine plantations.

Has anyone had any luck in Mt Crawford? I'm super new at this, so far it's only been slipperies.

With respect to storage, does anyone know if it is normal for a smell to emanate from the jar that the dried contents are kept in after a few days? The smell isn't particularly poignant, however, it is nonetheless present and seemingly indicative of decomposition. Visually, however, they seem normal, no signs of mould. Furthermore, fyi, they were dried with a dehydrator with no heat and placed in a glass coffee-jar with food-grade desiccant sachets.

Hey everyone, just wondering something. I have been exploring areas that should be perfect habitats according to all the guides. I'm exploring both pine forests and eucalypt grasslands, bracken ferns, gullys, near rivers all that. I'm finding hundreds of mushrooms, some edible which I love. But I just can't seem to find subs.
So my question really is, do I just have to keep looking and be lucky enough to find a spot? I'm assuming just because on paper somewhere should be a perfect place for them, doesn't mean you will actually find them? They just seem so elusive to me, but so many people are getting great hauls.
Am I missing something?

Okay, seeing as I too am an amateur who only just started last year, I'll give you my 2-cents on how I begun getting consistent finds.
Terrain. Analyse the terrain and topography of prospective locations using Google Maps. If you've done your research, you should already know what to look for, and it's only a matter of time before you stumble across your first batch.
Persistence. Keep at it; it takes a while. Be thorough with your foraging, multiple hours per region, per day, isn't out of the norm. Don't be alarmed if you go about multiple trips empty-handed - that's the game we play.
However, it does seem like you've done your homework, and if that's the case, change regions, be more diasporic. If you're searching the North right now, don't exactly be surprised you're not finding anything. Anecdotally, the new discoveries I've made this season have all been in the deep south, so don't be a stranger to road-trips if you're that compelled to make finds this season.
