Can you put a shoebox in the oven?

Lol okay sounds like a dumb question at first but really I don't see why not. I'm thinking about pasteurizing my coir right in its own shoebox. The oven only goes to 170 which is very low and shoeboxes are made out of pp5 which can tolerate a pressure cooker.

I'm not sure I'd do that because ovens don't heat that evenly. If you do, please report back with results.

I think I'll take the sticker off and try it. I'll put it on aluminum foil on an aluminum sheet pan, just in case it does melt lol but I really don't think it will.

I usually use an oven, but I put it in glass or metal first then rehydrate with boiling water.

Do you have a PC? Just do it in your PC in bags. I mean if your rehydrating your bulk sub your missing the point I think.

Sterilization in the pc leads to contam issues for open air stuff like bulk sub. I usually do bucket tek but I don't need that much sub rn, just a few shoeboxes

You can Pasteurize in a PC as well. Just don't lock the lid and use a kitchen thermometer with the kind with the probe and the long cord. Stick the probe in the center of the bag. Fill the PC half full and get it to a good temperature. Your thermometer will tell you with an alarm when you get to 165 and turn down the heat to maintain proper sterilization temperature for a hour or two.
I just mean. Shoebox in the oven= bad idea.

If I’m only making one or two I’ve started using shoeboxes instead of the bucket for coir prep since I noticed the tubs were pp5 a while back.
Just put the dry coir in then add hot water snap the lid and shake it a little.
I’m sure if you start with the water at the right temp it’ll pasteurize the coir too.

You don't really need to Pasteurize coir. But heating it to a certain point helps to cook down the fibers. I do think that certain coir needs to have some heat treatment because that shit can be fully of nasty.
My last batch off Amazon was like 20 bricks Ina a cardboard box. No shrink wrap or anything.
I think it is time to go to TSC and get a bail of straw and run it through the mulcher.
