After a pretty successful season for me so far of picking in Melbourne for subs I’ve started a few different ways of trying to get some sub mycelium to grow for future outdoor and maybe even indoor grows (with lots of luck) so far have 3 separate setups two are made from wet wood pellets to make saw dust, and today I also made a little container of cut up stems with wet cardboard to try and get some growth in a different method.

My containers with the saw dust haven’t progressed much it seems the mycelium isn’t really taking to it only really growing on the material that was originally attached to, Ive added more stems and mycelium to one of the containers just to see if it will kick it off. The cardboard container is doing very well tho mycelium is growing everywhere.

I’ve decided to add the most successful mycelium from each different project to a bulk container with added wood chip and other debris from near by a patch that someone destroyed the other day ;( thought maybe this could be a better way to save the patch

Cool, looking at doing something similar in Melbourne here. Might also try a agar agar

I found putting the stems in-between wet cardboard to start them off worked best. Then once there’s some decent growth split the cardboard in half and layering it in wood chips. The mycelium seemed awfully picky so I went with a couple different bags of mulch each with different wood types and sizes to get a good mix. Oh and I noticed they love to grow in pine cones as well so can’t hurt to add some into a mix as well good luck and just let me be till next year!

Hey everyone.
We had a spare terracotta planter box in the backyard. It sits in an area of almost constant shade. It was half full of soil. I recently went out to a pine forest and found some subs. While I was there, I noticed a fresh pile of woodchips near the entrance. I took a few bags home to put over the top of the soil. Soaked the woodchips with water. I made a whole in the wood chips, dropped the stems/roots of the subs in. Covered them over with the woodchips and then gave it a little bit of a watering with the can again.
A few days later, I found some subs growing on dung. I’m assuming the dung is colonised. I took some home. I dug a separate hole. Dropped the dung on the soil layer and covered back over with woodchips.
Am I a chance of getting this box growing any subs. Either this year or next?
I’ve been pointed in the direction of the outdoor grow guides, but what I’m wondering is, am I a chance with what I’ve done?

There’s a chance that the myc will colonise the rest of the medium you have, I don’t think it would fruit this year but. Aslong as there is some myc activity there you’re in for a chance. it’s not going to hurt if you just chuck unwanted subs or end of the stems in a woodchip patch just for the chance of it springing up some shrooms in the following years

Thanks for the heads up
I’ve been on three successful hunts recently and all of the ends have all gone in the same box, I found a few subs growing out of wombat droppings. Took a few of those home and put them on the soil and covered with damp woodchips.
I’d be over the moon if I found a pin next year. I guess I’ve just got to remember to keep the box damp over summer.

With all the mycelium I’ve grown from each different little project I’ve now layered wet cardboard and the mycelium throughout my backyard and layered wet euci mulch and hardwood mulch on top. With goodluck and keeping it watered and in good condition I’ll have some subs growing next year. Here are some photos of the finished setup, once I’ve seen some good colonisation I’ll be adding more material and mulch

To my surprise I have found a pin starting to form when checking up on the mycelium growth under the cardboard. I never expected to see this kind of growth this year, it’s growing on a well established piece of mycelium growing on bark that I had transferred from a spot when accidentally pulling it out. I first found it in the 27th under the cardboard, I quickly covered it back up with mulch to make sure the environment was sufficient for it to continue to grow and I’ve intended to track the progress
This is it today the 29th no signs of growth and especially after last nights freezing temperatures, the surrounding mulch and cardboard were frozen still
Although this growth of the pin wasn’t there from when I placed the mycelium there my thoughts are it must been already fruiting when I picked it but I didn’t notice, either way it is a very promising sign for me
