Sub? Identification - victoria
    #26700791 - 05/28/20 02:26 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello!

Has anyone come across psilocybe subs that once dried the gills are very yellow? We checked before we dehydrated them and we were sure they were subs but the gills on some of our mushies are very yellow and golden, we would love an ID request or some help.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa are sometimes sterile; no spores produced so no dark gills.
As for the id, it certainly looks like an active species, a subaeruginosa even, but can't really be sure from a dried fragment of a cap.

AS said, probably an active species. But a proper identification should always be based on pictures and information concerning fresh specimens.

If you already got a positive id based on those credentials, you should be safe.

Summerdayze had some with yellowish gills, fresh, found not long ago.

It seemed I had found a similar species with no spore prints and strange (last photo) yellowish gills.

Super interesting, had no clue that there were sterile ones! Good to know in case I come across them again in the future

Seems like it's quite common for psilocybe subaeruginosa to grow sterile fruits. Been a few id requests as of lately. For comparison, I've only found sterile semilanceata twice in 15 years.
