Hybrid Mileage Comes Up Short

I couldn't get the article to copy well, so here's a small part. It's interesting reading.
But after a few months of commuting to his job in Cincinnati, Blackshaw's hybrid euphoria vanished as his car's odometer revealed that the gas mileage he was hoping for was only a pipe dream. Honda's Civic Hybrid is rated by the EPA to get 47 miles per gallon in the city, and 48 mpg on the highway. After nearly 1,000 miles of mostly city driving, Blackshaw was getting 31.4 mpg. Link

Interesting, but I'm gonna need a reason why this should stay in PA&L rather than be moved to Science and Technology.

Activist scream for better mileage and praise hybrids. (incorrectly it seems)
The Federal government mandates fuel efficiency with laws.
Politics, Activism, Law.... all in one post.

That's really too bad.
Saving fuel, and other energy, is important, both because of the waste produced burning it and the limited supply available. I'm disappointed to hear that hybrid cars don't live up to the hype.
Apparently, the EPA needs to fix their tests.

Thats a shame....
What always struck me about the hybrid car...is its so ugly Even if i could afford a new car, and wanted to embrace/promote hybrid technology, i couldnt bring myself to cruise in that ride....

I've never gotten the claimed fuel efficiency in my car. I think it depends on a lot of factors, the biggest one would be how hard you drive it. I probably get 6-10 less than the average because I drive my car pretty hard, thats my fault. Another thing is the type of fuel. My friend has a Honda Insight. Highway mpg is 70 I think, he gets about 55 with premium, 60-70 with regular. Not to mention he's gotten his average up past 85mpg a few times on long road trips, and he says there are websites with insight owners posting around the same numbers. Also my friend has said that if you have a front license plate, its creates drag and lowers your mpg. Who knows, maybe that guy floors it all the time, has a front license plate, usees premium fuel, and is hauling 700 pounds of crap in his car.

another thing is air conditioning. If its like most other small engined cars, the a/c will sap the gas and the power your vehicle has.

good points daussaulit the problem with hybrids are that over all the value of money saved on gas is negated with the price of the cars. A friend of mine calculated that breaking even on the price of the honda hybrid car compared to a honda civic or accord would take owning the hybrid for 10-12 years.

Perhaps those who buy the hybrids are doing it for more than just to save money.
And if our gas were priced anywhere near like it is in the rest of the world, it would easily make up for its increased price.
Not to mention, as with any new tech, the price will fall soon.

Effectiveness should be our main concern, but since we're shallow...
Why is it so fucking ugly? Its the future, highest level of technology, a hybrid car. Shouldn't it look all futury and pimp? I'm sure they'd sell a lot more if it did...

Okay....
I'm still having a really hard time seeing how any of the comments in this thread so far relate to politics or activism or law. Why is this thread still here?

Because alternative energy and increasing fuel efficiency is vital to reducing dependence on middle east oil. If the technology at the moment is not actually working it is interesting to know and other solutions should be found.
