The decision to purchase a gun should not be made lightly. If you're serious about getting one you do want a gun that will go "bang" as required, so it's not an item you should skimp on. Any of the big name manufacturers will do. Purchase through a dealer as they usually have return policies in case you encounter glitches. Factory refurbished are less expensive and often just as good as new. The important thing is finding a size and caliber that fit your body type. I carry either a Walther PPK-S .380 or a Sig 225/P6 9 mm on those rare occasions when I feel the need. Either will provide sufficient firepower, especially when loaded with Hydra-Shok hollow points. You probably don't need a big gun with a high capacity magazine. My Sig holds 9 rounds (8 in the magazine and 1 in the tube) so I just carry an extra magazine. If you feel that you need more than that then you're probably hanging out with the wrong crowd. You should also plan to train regularly with your weapon as shooting is a losable skill. Most gunfights take place within a distance of about 7 yards so you don't need to train much beyond that. Get in the habit of cleaning your weapon after each trip to the range. Also plan on getting a gun safe. Biometric safes provide quick access and you can pick one up for $100-200.
All things considered gun ownership is a big responsibility. You will likely never have to use it defensively but if you do proper training will definitely give you the edge. Consider taking a course on tactical shooting and know the gun laws in your state well. These things are often covered in concealed carry courses.

OP: you want an xds chambered in 9mm
BJJ is great, except when they come at you with a knife. Then you want a gun.
Strangely I think BJJ might be a better option if they come at you with a gun.

$600 is around the medium value side. Sub $100 to $300 is like the low end, $400-$800 is around the mid ground. Once you start approaching $1k youre getting the to higher end. Of course theres the super high end thats up in the $3000-$5000 range.
If you just want something for personal defense, and dont need something pretty, Id look at a Glock, a Smith and Wesson M&P, or a Rugar SR. But theres a lot of others.
Ive seen the Smith and Wesson SD mentioned, Id stay away from that one personally. I owned one of the .40 versions, and hated it. Couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with it, even at just 10 yards. Had a lot of "slop" to it. Just not a good gun.
One of my favorite handguns for the $500ish mark was my CZ P-07 Duty. Loved that pistol. Smooth as butter, tight fit, and I could put up some nice groups at 25 or 30 yards.
But theres a lot of decent pistols made these days for the $400-$600 price point. Id say go to a gun shop when you can, ask to hold a few, see what fits best in your hand. You gotta find something that fits good in your hand and is easy for you to operate.

Glocks are overpriced for what they are. If I’m carrying I don’t want a gun in my pants where I’m relying on a trigger safety. Especially around my kid. One of my Glocks was traded for an ar and my other one hasn’t left the safe in 4 years. I carry a Kimber or a XD. 1911s are nice because it has the thumb safety and grip safety, the XD is nice because it has a trigger and grip safety. 1911 would be my first choice. XD would be my second, I have two that I rotate between.

The German Imperial caliber (the standard 9mm Luger, 9x19mm Parabelum of 1902) is efficient and ubiquitous. A .45 ACP packs twice the wallop but then recoil becomes an issue and its "twice the wallop that should get the job done if you aim properly."
What I saw recommended is to buy a good second hand handgun from a reputable dealer.
Like a good used car, just a much value for the money for half the price.
.38 special used to be the cop caliber but they switched to the German Imperial caliber because analysis of shootings showed higher efficiency. A 9mm Luger pumps 1.5-2x as many joules of impact energy in a target as a .38 Special, 3-4x as much as an arrow from an English Longbow (140 J)

Quote:
Under STANAG 4090, it is a standard cartridge for NATO forces as well as many non-NATO countries.[9]
According to the 2014 edition of Cartridges of the World, the 9×19mm Parabellum is "the world's most popular and widely used military handgun and submachine gun cartridge."[10][11] In 2007, Newsweek claimed that "about 60 percent of the firearms in use by police are 9mms" and credited 9×19mm Parabellum pistol sales with making semiautomatic pistols more popular than revolvers.[12] The popularity of this cartridge can be attributed to the widely held conviction that it is effective in police and self-defense use.[13] Its low cost and wide availability contribute to the caliber's continuing popularity.
I'd go with what NATO standardizes.

Canada: where an armed robber can break into your home, you shoot them with your legally owned firearm and YOU go to jail.
I love the country, but it's got some weird gun laws, which is weird to me from a self reliability stand point in a country where nature seems out to get you 6 months out of the year and there are many small towns with homesteads hours away from any official help.

If NATO standardizes 9mm, it is most popular with police and consumers, there is a message here.
You may think of NATO what you like but if they standardize something, the science is there.
Take this dagger for instance, the only dagger that is NATO milspec:

You can tell that this Fairbairn-Sykes dagger is optimized to do what its supposed to do, without a single frill or milligram too many.
I'd go with 9mm.

Not necessarily. It might be found to be self defense or it might not, depending on the circumstances.

It's 2020, there's so many good fuckin guns out now it's crazy. Just get something in 9mm and train with it, get comfortable. Glock 19 has my vote. Put a light on whatever it is you get. You can't go wrong buying 99% of modern pistols.
Don't cheap out, save a little longer and buy a quality pistol you will have for the rest of your life.

Im trying to read up on how the guns differentiate, but theres so many differences between them all it seems. Im thinking a 9mm, sounds like .45 ACP has more recoil as well... but I wonder exactly how much. I read that 1911s jam the most, a vastly high percentage of people reported that supposedly.
I have a kid, and will be EXTREMELY cautious and safe about it, but I need something that is legit. Ive read all your comments, so many different guns. I went on a gun forum, and some people said the glock is a more so a basic gun. Nothing special, but its not shitty either. I need to go and try some out.

.45 ACP will cost more to shoot at $380 per 1000 bullets vs 9mm costing $245 for 1000. There's really no reason not to get a 9mm imo and you will put defensive rounds in it anyway.
