Advice for substrate choice for oysters?
    #26699402 - 05/27/20 01:02 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

So I want to get into growing some golden, pink, and pearl oysters and I might just spawn to straw and make a few laundry baskets or logs. But I know that to get the best yields possible it’s preferable to supplement with other bulk options. What have you guys found works best for you? Some mix of soybean hulls/hardwood fuel pellets/bran? Just wondering if any experienced growers have found ratios that work best for them

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, “What road do I take?”

The cat asked, “Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t know,” Alice answered.

“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”

Hardwood fuel pellets and soy hulls are hands down the best in every way they are the easiest to use the fastest and the best yield. Straw sucks trust me. Stay away from straw.

To use soy hulls mix 50/50 by weight with fuel pellets nothing else is needed. Except for water!

Be careful with the water until you know what is right for the brand of fuel pellets you end up buying.

Or use this...

If im fruiting them i make sawdust blocks with 20%bran 10% gypsum and toss them into some woodchips once spent.
If im making spawn for logs i cut out the bran and double the gypsum. When i say logs i mean like actual logs not straw logs. Logs last for years by the way.

Sawdust is free for me and my prefered choice so cant really comment on the straw.

Just to give you an idea I make 33 five lb blocks from one 40 lb bag of HWFP the fuel pellets cost about $6 for 40 lbs. soy is about $5 for 50 lbs. so that is about 0.30 of material for every 5 lb bag. I get at least 1.5 lbs from every bag 1st flush. Once you add in a bag and the electricity You are at about $1. Spend a dollar get $15 back and remember I still can get 2 more flushes. I have tried straw and supplementing wood with bran. I will never go back to either one as long as I can get my hands on soyhulls!! But if I could not get soy I would go with bran. I hate the work and time involved with straw. Time is money.

I do everything organic and i cant find organic soy hulls for a good price in my area and shipping is always ridiculous anytime i find a decent price online so I havent gotten the chance to try them so ive been sticking with bran till i find a good source.

Thankyou both for your answers! I think I’ll go with the 50/50 mix of soy hulls and fuel pellets. Any advice on adding gypsum to the mix? From what I know, you don’t need much so maybe just the 2-5% range?

I don't think Gypsum would help. But it would not hurt so you could try and see if there is any benefit to adding gypsum.

Will rice bran work as a supplement?

Right now I’m running king oysters on a hardwood pellet/coir mix and it colonized very quickly.

I’m about to spawn pearl oysters and I know they’re different and need a better mix then just pellets.

Stick with what has been proven. You might be able to use rice bran but then you need to do tests or find a recipe. It is like baking a cake you don't just switch ingredients. If you need to substitute an ingredient you find out how much to substitute. I just spent the time finding soy hulls and it did take me awhile. Once you find them the work is done. Soy hulls are $5 for 50 lbs. If you cant find soyhull go with wheat bran another proven recipe. I have left two recipes but be careful with the water untill you know what you need for your brand of HWFP's.

If you are using the wheat bran recipe I used the Espoma chicken manure...
