Yeah I have it every now and then. I notice it a little more on softer agar. I always have just referred to it as the clear leading edge of the myc, but that's a mouthful lol. And yeah, I don't know if I agree that's it's mold 100% of the time. If it is fairly disorganized and fluffy, sure. But I've had it with TC-verified clean plates, so

I have a tub that has a pretty good pinset but they dont seem to grow. I first started seeing pins at 5/17 and harvested 5-7 mature fruits on 5/25. However, it's been 10 days since the first pins and below are pictures of how they currently look. You could see some of them being 2 inches tall, while the other 95% are small looking pins. Are they aborts? Why is the growth so slow?

If it's a clear, shiny halo that can only be seen with light at certain angles, it's mold.

All right, good. Cause what I'm talking about has none of those characteristics.

If you're curious what I mean, look at some of Bod's plates found in the RW grow along thread. On the first or second page of that thread. Following the 7-30-18 link. Someone suggests it may have to do with agar/nutes as well and/or being recently taken from the germ plate.

That whole tub is aborting. Something is wrong. Looks like overly wet bacteria sub that pinned and now is dieing.

Alright hive mind, I'm back. (I seem to be on here a lot searching the forums lately.)

You mentioned that condensation can lead to the possibility of contams in the agar.

Well, as much as it pains me to say, pretty much all of my plates have condensation. Things evaporate very quickly here, as the average humidity is often around 35 percent this time of year. Whenever I've heated my agar to a pourable state, it's always putting off steam.

I've been using distilled water, but is there anything else I can do to try and limit the amount of condensation, or is there some sort of 'dry' agar alternative?

people place a warm glass of water on top to help clear up the plates

leaving them stacked to cool should help as well

Best way to lessen your condensation is letting your agar cool down as much as possible before pouring your plates. Assuming you're pouring your plates and not using no-pours.

It seems overly wet because I took the picture after I misted. It was dry prior to the mist and there aren't any bad smells. I might just leave em alone and see what they do. If I harvest all the aborts, will 2nd flush grow fine?

-Gan

I've used both the no pour method, as well as pouring plates. They both seemed to have fairly significant condensation.

I have currently dropped spores on 10 plates overall however. Hopefully they come out alright. When they start to germinate I'll more than likely be asking about identifying any issues until I get my own trained eye for spotting things.

what temperature, roughly, are you pouring your plates?

If I had to guess, I'd say I'm attempting to pour around 90-95 C. As I understand it, agar will start to solidify around 85C (correct me if I'm wrong, this is my first foray into agar)

The problem is at my altitude water boils at around 95C, so I have a relatively small window from it being near boiling, and solidifying. (If the 85C is correct of course.)

EDIT: Below is the *worst* of the petri dishes, the others are better than that, however they all have slight mist, as well as my no pour attempt

Any recommendations on microscope type or brand out there? Been doing research but the I only search I found on the forums was Allan starting a thread on the importance of microscopy for identification purposes.

Hey ya'll.... Do you strip meta data from your photos before upload? (kinda grow related, sorta?)

Nothing to fancy.

These are looking a little funny. Large heads, skinny striped stems. I think half will abort. Ideas?

the fruit is so small.

No man, see this from wikipedia:
Quote:

Agar exhibits hysteresis, melting at 85 °C (358 K, 185 °F) and solidifying from 32–40 °C (305–313 K, 90–104 °F).[

You can pour just fine at 60 C, you can go as low as you dare, if you get clumps pour hotter.

Common shroomery wisdom is to start your agar pour once the bottle reaches 120f. Divided into fake degrees that makes about 48c.
