no pinning of cakes after over week in fruiting chamber
    #26697452 - 05/26/20 04:41 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

first time trying to grow from spores. Got the cakes cultivated, looking good.
Dunked them in water for 24 hours. rolled them in cocos (we do not have vermucilite here) and now in fruiting chamber. I don't seem to see any pinning starting. I included a picture.  I mist them few times a day. It is pretty hot here were I live,  around 27 C , 80 F. Should I turn on AC..? or just wait. Hope someone can help. Thanks a lot

Did you let them consolidate for a week before birthing?

Thanks for your answer. Maybe I was a little too quick.. they were fully colonized though it seems. see here a picture when I put it in water.
Will it be a problem..? anything I can do..?

Basically with cakes once they reach full colonization you want to let them consolidate an extra week before birthing.

So that week without any pinning could just be your cakes finishing up. The mycelium looks healthy so it seems fine at the moment. If you do cakes in the future wait the extra week before birthing. Best to be safe with cakes as uncolonized sub can lead to contamination and you cant see the core of the cake or under the lid.

Also perlite is preferred for sgfc if its available. Look into bulksubs/monotubs. I personally dont ever see myself making cakes again but if i did id spawn them to bulk. Bulk is much less maitnence.

Wouldnt hurt to get some more going just in case. 3 cakes won't produce an enormous amount either. Nice to have a back up when first starting.

Does grains like millet or brown rice needs a week of consolidation too? thanks!

Grains don’t need to consolidate. I’m experience they go bad after too long (couple months at room temp)

Cakes you want to consolidate because you want the mycelium to penetrate, colonize, "glue together", and become contam resistant by being a solid chunk of mycelium.

Grains on the other hand you do not want to consolidate because the mycelium doesnt actually penetrate the grain and actually only coats the outside and if you consolidate they will become very difficult to break up and may result in busting grains increasing contam risk. Also grains you can shake so you have a much better idea of when everything is evenly colonized while cakes you give an extra week because theres areas you cant see.

So if you're using the whole grains for spawn dont consolidate if your using grain flour for pf tek consolidate.
Brf is the standars for pf teks but i wouldnt be suprised if other grains flours worked as well
