American health care
    #2669706 - 05/12/04 07:07 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Apparently, American health care is twice as expensive and no better than health care in other developed nations, such as Canada and the UK:

Why?

hrmmm...

I don't think things are comprable.

my grandfather came to the US for his
cancer treatment because of the wait
in Canada.

the quality may be the same, the price
different, but the terms are a third metric
that should be considered.

I don't think that these large social health
care systems are as responsive as a free
market system.

Because the government is involved.

Canada has the government involved in healthcare far more than the US.
I personally belive that other institutions than the government are partly to blame, such as the professions (specifically, those of doctors and of lawyers) and hospitals.

The article is a review of studies comparing the healthcare systems in Australia, Canada, Britain, New Zealand and the United States. None of the systems was clearly the worst or clearly the best in quality of care, in terms of the chances of dying if you have a disease such as cancer (Britain was the worst for cancer, Canada the worst for heart disease).

The largest difference is that the US spent $4,887 per capita on health care in 2001, compared to $2,792 in Canada, $2,513 in Australia and $1,992 in Britain.

Also I know this idea isnt popular at all....and I will probally get hassled for this....

But the US does do most of the medical reaserch does it not? I know alot is dont in other western countries and a great deal of asian countries....but most countries dont do a lick of reaserch...perhaps ours is more expensive because of all the reaserch we do?

I know in Mexico the drugs are cheaper...probally because the drug companies charge us more simply cause we can afford it....but how do american reaserch dollars factor in to the cost? Do Mexicans pay for Americans reaserch? Should they? Or do Mexicans simply have to pay the manufacture costs? Is that why there drugs are cheaper?
