It has to do with the way the cells are aligned in the cap tissue. In these the hyphae are extended out radially from the center of the cap, so if the tissue splits it will do so the way the cell are aligned rather than across them, and the splitting will almost always be at the cap margin. In the Agrocybes you find the cap splits like a mud flat because the cells in the cap cuticle are standing more or less straight up so there aren't any lines for the splitting to align along, and the splitting can occur anywhere, not just at the cap margin.

What he said, I see this happening a lot when the humidity levels drop low, with age and direct sun exposure, but its quite common in some species.

Yeah they are both right for sure.
It happens when the caps of immature mushrooms dry out, then get wet and moisten, then start growing again. this causes too much tension on the cells that are dry, splitting them apart where they are weakest (radially extended hyphae). :super:
