Gaming Monitors Questions
    #26696122 - 05/26/20 02:28 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

hello all

So recently I've been thinking about getting a 40 inch 4K gaming monitor to go with my new pc.  I should have thought about this a few weeks ago, because that's when I went and got myself a 4K Samsung 43inch TV for my pc.  It does the job ok, but now I wish that I had saved the $850 Au dollars and put it towards a proper monitor.

Just yesterday, I asked a computer shop for prices of 40-45 inch monitors and was told that they can get me one for just under $2000 Australian dollars.

So my question is this, or should I say, these;

1. Can a 60 Hertz tv/monitor only display 60 frames per second or can they go higher (frame rates)?

2. If using the display port, does the picture quality improve noticeably over HDMI or, does it only allow for a higher Hertz (120 or 144) and/or higher frame rates (up to 120 or more)?

One problem I have with my 4K tv is that because I'm sitting so close to it, that when the screen displays a black screen, I can see a slight white haze in the black image (especially in one corner).
If I stand further away from my tv, this problem disappears.  I guess that if I had a good monitor, blacks would look much better then it does on my tv, but in saying that, when there is a image on the screen (playing a game), it actually looks pretty damn good.

Also, I know that on most youtube videos that talk about using tv's for a monitor that they will mention lag, but my tv seems pretty quick in displaying changes on screen when I move my mouse
(playing a FPS), so it's not a problem for me with this tv.  So basically the last question is, should I get a monitor for a slight to moderate overall improvement in picture quality (for big bucks),
or should I just stay with my Samsung 4k TV?

Any thoughts???

Blacks and 'back-light bleed' varies from monitor to monitor. It's really a case of 'you get what you pay for', I'm afraid. This website was most useful (for me) with reviews of individual monitors: https://www.rtings.com/

To answer your other questions, 1. No, a 60hz monitor can't go above 60fps, near enough. It's not exactly the same thing, but it is for all practical purposes.

2. No, display port won't really improve quality by much. There are small differences to do with bandwidth, but really it's more to do with specific monitors and gpus.

On that subject you should check whether your graphics card can run 4k on the games you like to play. Getting 144hz on 4k will require dialling down quality settings for most PCs.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Thank you chronotope999 for your reply.

I have a Nvidia gtx 1660 Super graphics card and no it's not suited for 4k gaming,  but that's ok with me as it does come close to 4k gaming capabilities.  On the game "The Outer Worlds" with gfx settings maxed at 4k the game was not able to display a smooth frame rate, but when I selected the next lower available resolution, the game then ran smoothly.  So it's a good card, but could be better.

Since first making this thread, I've made a few changes to my tv.  First, I pushed it back so that im not so close, and then I made some further changes to the tv's settings and nvidia control panel.  Basically, the black screen problem has improved, it's still happening, but just not as much as before.

So I've decided that I'll put off buying a dedicated 4k monitor until I upgrade my graphics card, which should be around 2-3 years away, and im hoping by then that 4k monitors should come down in price, hopefully.

Thanks again for your help chronotope999

I agree: I hope prices come down a bit more, too. I bought a new monitor recently, but quickly found that although you can get something with good specs for very little money, you do still have to pay quite a bit for something that will be able to do a good job with the impressive resolutions, refresh, etc.

'The Outer Worlds' looks amazing, by the way. Enjoy!

If you don't mind me asking chronotope999, what monitor did you get?

Also, I've been thinking about screen size and now I think when I do buy a 4k monitor, that I would like a 40 inch.  43 inch is just a little bit too big.

Sure, this is the one I went for:

https://www.msi.com/Monitor/Optix-MAG271CQR

One thing that makes a big difference is view distance vs pixel density, I think. This one is 27 inches, and I love how sharp it looks from the 70-80cm I typically sit from the screen. I work with dual monitors, so any bigger, and I'd be forever moving my neck back and forth, or just not using the screen space.

I paid £300 UK for it, not a bad deal... I'm happy with it after around a month's use.
