vinsue said: Has anyone seen this yet? Is it even legit? https://calgaryherald.com/cannabis/cannabis-shows-promise-blocking-coronavirus-infection-alberta-researcher/ Cannabis extracts are showing potential in making people more resistant to the novel coronavirus, says an Alberta researcher leading a study.
After sifting through 400 cannabis strains, researchers at the University of Lethbridge are concentrating on about a dozen that show promising results in ensuring less fertile ground for the potentially lethal virus to take root, said biological scientist Dr. Igor Kovalchuk. “A number of them have reduced the number of these (virus) receptors by 73 per cent, the chance of it getting in is much lower,” said Kovalchuk.
“If they can reduce the number of receptors, there’s much less chance of getting infected.”
Employing cannabis sativa strains over the past three months, the researcher said the effective balance between cannabis components THC and CBD — the latter more typically associated with medical use — is still unclear in blocking the novel coronavirus...
. . .
Looks a little questionable to me. He says the cannabis somehow reduces the virus receptors... is he talking about ACE2? And does he mean it binds to ACE2? That would be very short lived protection, and definitely not a reduction. Even if a reduction in ACE2 was possible, I'd think it could result in negative covid-unrelated consequences, those receptors and the ac enzyme serve important functions. Im also not sure how cannabis could bring about any sort of reduction in receptor sites other than temporary binding(which Ive heard about with nicotine but not cannabis)... unless somehow it limits production of the ac enzyme leading to unused receptors leading to downregulation of ACE2 receptor sites. I'm also not really convinced that a lesser number of receptor sites will stop the virus from finding the available ones. You can downregulate your dopamine receptor sites to hell, but snort a bump of dope and whatever receptors are still in business will get saturated instantly. Can only imagine with a live virus the seeking potential is that much greater.
Virology definitely isn't my area of expertise though. I'd guess oral thc/cbd won't be much harm at all, but any smoke in the lungs is something that I'd personally avoid for a while.
Tons of researchers out there working on anything related to the virus are looking at anything they can spin as being helpful as tools to get their tenure or salary increases or fame or book sales etc. Im pretty weary of most research coming out right now, the media is filled with people with no science background who will eat up any juicy headlines and run with it.

Bronx deaths = 4393 Bronx Population = 1.418 million
Mortality rate = .31%
The Bronx has a has a higher life expectancy than the US average, so it’s not any unhealthier than the US as a whole.

My 90 year old great aunt with COVID made a big rally against it at first and it looked like she had beat it, apparently she's in kidney failure at the moment, they'll be sending her home to die with palliative hospice in the next few days from what I've heard.
I didn't know her at all. Everyone in the family who knows her said she definitely had good years left in her though.
It's easy for us younger people to look at people in their 90's, 80's and 70's and be like... "whatever". In reality though many people in those age groups live vibrant lives and can live for decades more... and mean a whole lot to the loved ones they'll leave behind prematurely due soley to this virus.

im not convinced the infrastructure for accurately reporting cause of death exists in a lot of developing countries. I would image a lot of that relies on organizations like WHO but all that has to be rolled out. Also could just be that the circulating strains are getting increasingly weak over time. Just speculating
As for Africa. They’re smart enough to at least try not to get sick.
India a shit they’ll do what they can because they’re educated. They remember sars and mers.
Only America combines stupid with an endless selfishness and arrogance to think they can’t suffer from a disease.
There’s a reason why America is #1 in deaths BY FAR. Our government our culture our selfishness is unique to the planet. We fucking DESERVE it.

Are they reopened?
Mostly increasing in the south. Maybe it's the seasonal effect or maybe it's just Bosonaro's dumb ass. He can't convince the governors to open the economy so he's just telling everyone to ignore the social distancing and getting both the negative health and the economic effects as a result.
India is still in lockdown. I think they're doing pretty well considering the population density.Quote:

My wife is from Brazil and she refuses to even talk about it. She hears from family how it is going there and apparently the president there is essentially "Brazilian Trump".
How just about every single country could see this happening to other countries, start getting cases, and STILL say "Eh, we'll be fine" right up until shit hits the fan for THEM is beyond me.
Then the next country sees what's happening there, ignores all lessons learned, then gets hit hard...fucking rinse and repeat.

Know why? Because greedy fat cat assholes who run corporations and every single fucking thing allowed corps to be recognized as a human entity, and then they were allowed to move businesses overseas, pay people nickels and pennies an hour, and ship it back here cheaper than PAYING A FUCKING LIVING WAGE TO THE WORKERS! ONLY because the rich company owners WILL NOT fucking take less money, they only want more more more and maximize as much as they can get without giving ANY to the people who help the make these millions/billions. They could make millions and millions, but instead they want billions. GREEDY SLIMEY FUCKFACED DOG DICK SUCKING FUCKS!
