Sounds like you need a 9mm/.45 and a .22LR that is similar in dimensions to it, for practice shooting.

You'll become the target of heated debate if you buy a Glock, and the target of bitter ridicule if you buy a Hi-point. You can't go wrong with a glock but the ridicule of buying a Hi-point can kill a man :P

I've only been at a gun range once, but the difference between shooting .38 and .45 is huge, I can't imagine training with a .22 and then having to use .45 is a good idea, is it?

With shit going as bad as it is here, and the lax attitude people are taking towards the virus I'm seriously considering getting an illegal one (a legal one is practically useless here, a lawyer friend of mine had trouble defending a client of his who used a knife to defend against a gun wielding thug). A blacksmith that I know has apparently been doing work at some malls to prep them for looters, and I don't think private citizens will be safe either.

You guys are lucky to have gun rights, exercise them if you can!

If you shoot lots with a .22 you know how to aim.

If you shoot a few times with your lethal caliber gun you'll appreciate the recoil.

Most people drop like a brick if you double-tap aimed.

Learning to handle recoil is 1 thing, learning to aim another, that takes a lot more bullets.

Suppose you land an aimed one of these in a person's central body mass (or head if you're a gamer)

You will be better able to handle the recoil than your assailant.

I don’t say this with any hostility, but I don’t think you understand where people who choose to carry are coming from... With the exception of the idiotic few who inhabit all groups, people don’t carry and/or choose to buy a handgun out of “fear”. It’s a very nuanced, multi-faceted topic, just like the one that this website revolves around. For starters, look at it like a type of insurance policy. Normal, everyday people don’t get insurance because they’re afraid to leave the house otherwise. They get insurance for when “shit goes wrong”. They’re not expecting for it to do so at any second, but it would be foolish to assume that rarity of occurrence is equal to non-existence. You carry insurance as a way to help soften the blow, when and if, something bad were to happen. It’s not like robbery, assault, car-jacking, kidnapping, etc. etc., is completely unheard of and non-existent. Yes, we do have police to hopefully help deter crime, but more often they respond to crime instead. It never hurts to be able to stand on your own two feet, push come to shove. And that’s only one aspect of this topic.

I hope you continue to experience the same level of safety that you have so far in life. I truly mean that. I wish you nothing but the best.

LOL! Those are quite the true words Asante. Nothing like a single stack 9mm that weighs as much as a brick, and still manages to have a relatively flimsy slide due to the zemak(pot metal) construction... Beats the pants off of nothing at all though.

I am hardcore progressive liberal, a Democratic Socialist if you will.  I believe in gun ownership.  I wish we could get some sensible legislation down that doesn't infringe on the 2nd Amendment but also reduces the number of guns we have in this country (in a voluntary way).  I don't know the solutions, but I do ignoring those with vested interests in this is a good place to start.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I genuinely appreciate it. I didnt realize you could get popular named guns for pretty cheap. I want a gun because I have a family, and I want to go shooting ay a range and at friends houses. Id like a full size, but something that could be carried if one wanted. Im going to do some reading and report back tonight. Again, thank you.

Home invasions only happen to drug dealers. If you shoot someone in defense of your illegal drug stash you are a criminal. I guess you can maybe get off if you are white but if you are black or Hispanic its a drug rip off gone bad not a case of self defense in a home invasion.

I think guns for self defense is retarded as most wanna be Charlie Bronsons end up shooting their family members because you thought it was an ethnic minority breaking in to rape your white wife with his large possibly uncircumcised penis. A lot of "whoops your family member is dead" and not that many hero stories. Seems a very American thing to believe in, that you will save the day you good guy with a gun. Personally if I hear a bump in the night I grab a bat to go investigate, like a normal person. Grabbing a gun is so over the top, it's crazy. I would hate to be that scared of life that I need to hide behind a gun.

I will admit I was wrong on gun control on zombie day though

Good point Asante! Handling air arms did help me have half decent aim and trigger discipline when I actually had a firearm in my hands.

I don't get why people hate on Hi Point so much, for the price they seem like a very good option. If they can take that much abuse and still shoot straight it's worth considering. That being said, I'm not sure I'd like to put my life in its hands when it comes down to defending myself.

Cool story, nobody gives a fuck.

OP get a Glock and be done with it lol.  Could probably get a gen 3 or 4 for pretty cheap and its a reliable gun.

are you looking to get a manual safety?

I don’t think glock really has one? Could be wrong, maybe they have a model
I am not familiar but Glocks safety system seems really strange.
No manual safety but a trigger lever-actuated passive safety.

I think glock would be a good choice, carrying in a proper holster and good training would be vital.
I am currently looking at Sigs 365. Glock like but has a manual safety and solid good reviews.
I really like the size of it too but the price of the mags are up there. Glocks mags are Cheap.

It would be worth it to head out to a range that allows rentals so you can feel what might work best.

Right no safety on the glock except the passive trigger safety.

Kept in a proper holster shouldn't ever be a problem.  I agree going and trying some guns is probably the best way to see whats comfortable
