Looking to buy first handgun for defense
    #26695972 - 05/25/20 11:39 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

So Ive been debating on buying my first gun for a year or two. Id like to buy a handgun where I can go and shoot at targets to practice without spending a ton on ammo if possible. Mu buddy was showing me one and it costs like 600$, I dont want anything shitty but that seems like the going rate for quality or no?

It just seems like a lot for a gun, but its something youd want to be quality. I was initially trying to only spend like 300$, but was shown ones costing upwards of 500$. Cheaper ones were like hipoint (I know nothing about guns.)

You’re going to want to look at handguns from manufacturers like Canik and Tanfoglio. Also some good Walther and Smith & Wesson offerings. Steyr makes a really good model of handgun as well, I forget the name of it though. There’s a lot of options that are competitive to Glock that are much cheaper. Lots of great CZ-75 knock-offs as well, since Czechoslovakia didn’t have patent laws being a Communist nation at the time of the CZ-75’s creation.

The Smith & Wesson SD9 is almost the exact same gun as a Glock, just FYI, but much closer in your price range.

Oh, and Ruger makes great value offerings as well.

My suggestion is to go to a few well-stocked gun stores, look around in your price range, and ask to handle things that catch your eye. Join some online gun forums as well and learn a bit about the subject too; like any other industry, there are truths and there is also hype bs.

Taurus G2c sounds like a good option for you.
9mm is fairly inexpensive for going out on the range and plinking, and is an excellent defensive cartridge.
This one at Buds is $249
https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/100792 Have it shipped right to a FFL near you.

I've heard nothing but good things about this line of taurus hanguns.

The comments in this video are pretty convincing as well. Look around

I own a PT92 from Taurus and it has been rock solid reliable. I got mine on sale for $300 even, and its a handgun which I would also recommend, but they are quite a bit more expensive nowadays. And difficult to carry if you should choose to go that route. The G2c is a compact handgun as apposed to the full size of the PT92

Don't forget about buying used. Plenty of quality handguns can be had for much less expensive prices simply because they've been previously owned.

This site as well as others regularly has batches of historic old military surplus handguns and vintage police trade ins for very reasonable prices. Old models that have been proven by various militaries and agencies. Make sure you consider the prices of the caliber it uses and availability of parts too.
https://www.classicfirearms.com/smith-and-wesson-5906-good-hg1806g/ My old man has an old smith and wesson like this and it is a great firearm. All metal too, if you shy away from the polymer.

Many used revolvers available too at reasonable prices as well. .38 special is a very cheap cartridge, and the reliably and simplicity of a wheel gun is unparalleled, been used for damn near a century by the po-po. Lots of hot +p defensive ammo varieties, makes them formidable defensive cartridges.

I carry a S&W 638 in my pocket in a de santis holster with 125 grain BJHP Remington Golden Saber 38 special +p ammo. I'm satisfied with it.

I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS CHANNEL. Paul Harrel has a wealth of knowledge, and I suggest watching videos that might pertain to your particular circumstances. I always come away learning something I didn't know.

get a fuckin glock bro.. might be a little more expensive but its one of the best platforms to learn on... there are So many different variations and its mainly chambered in 9mm which is a cheaper more manageable caliber while maintaining decent accuracy.. but one of the coolest features about the glock is its stock compatibility. If your state/country allows it you can buy 'chassis' for the glock which basically transforms it from a pistol to a PDW with a stock which obviously provides more stable shots. Its all around one of the best piatols.. don't waste your time on other platforms if you want accuracy and reliability and a universal platform pick the glock

I bought my dad a Ruger 380ACP and it cost me under 300 out the door. I've been thinking of picking up one for myself. Handguns by and large will be more than your avarage rifle. If your looking for something like a conceal carry or self defence get the ACP. If you want to get into marksmanship for fun or maybe hunt at some point get a rifle.

Bad dreams.

I would only buy Glock if I ever needed a gun.

My friends here all seem to vote shotgun for home defense though.

Ive got a ruger LC9 for carry.

Nothing to write home about but it will do the job,

As far as home defense goes, get a shotgun.

Exactly. It's meant for close range. And as for home defense get 2 shotguns :awehigh:

Edit: mine is the ec9s and I have the extended clip which I love way more than the stock mag.

Shotgun for home defense definitely isn’t “wrong”, per se, but is often misunderstood. Lots of people get the idea that you don’t need to aim hardly as much with one indoors due to the “spread”, but the truth is that at short distances, like in a home, there will hardly be any discernible spread whatsoever, and you’ll need to aim just as much as you would with anything else.

Also, Taurus can be a good value, IF you get one without any defects. They’re one of, if not the, largest manufacturer of firearms in the world, so generally their stuff is good to go, but there are documented cases of them churning out lemons from time to time. If you’re considering a Taurus, I suggest buying one locally that you can personally check out and function check. And try to stay away from Bud’s. Their pricing can be enticing at times but I assure you they are a scummy company to deal with. Go to YouTube and check out a channel called TheYankeeMarshal and see what he has to say about Bud’s; you’ll see what I mean.

I’m coming off of an infusion as we speak, so if any of this is worded oddly my apologies.

And stay away from pocket pistols for your first firearm. Go either full-size or compact, but not sub-compact/pocket. Their small size makes for an unpleasant shooting experience both in feel and in accuracy results.

Wow!

Look at all the cowards who are afraid to leave their homes without a gun.

I've lived in some rough neighborhoods in my day and never felt so afraid that I wanted to run out and buy a fucking handgun.

Needing a gun to walk the streets is the sign of a true chickenshit coward.
