Rye grain that wont colonize.

I've got two separate 1 pound rye bags that are 30 days since inoculation. They both almost fully colonized about a week ago. Each has a spot about the size of a golf ball that womt colonize. Odd. Can I spawn my bul substrate with this grain? Dont really know what else to do since there has been no progress on those spots in a week. Maybe cut the bag open and get rid of the uncolonized grain? Any advice would be great.

Generally the advice givin is to wait until its fully colonized... It could be too dry or bacterial! 1lb shouldn't take that long! Considering it's both bags I'd bet on it being dry
Did you buy them from a vendor or make them yourself?
Did you mix your bag at 30% colonization?
If you mix it now it can stall but will finish colonizing!
Without a picture it's difficult to examine the spot!

I bought from a vendor and I did mix. I've been at low temps 65-70 i figured that may have caused the long colonization time. I may try breaking up again.

You can just open the bag up and pick out the uncolonized grains and then spawn, if it’s truly a golf ball sized spot. Is it right up near a filter patch or something?

That's a negative! You don't pick out uncolonized grain. If you haven't shook yet, do that, let her recover.

You would shake an entire bag or jar, that’s already been shaken, just to colonize a golf ball of grain that won’t colonize? When you spawn, you’re opening it up into open air anyway. Nothing wrong with flicking off some uncolonized dry grains.

I would, however if that spot exists after a 30% shake, I would discard the bag or jar. Are you really gonna pick out / flick off 200+ pieces of grain, golf ball size? Not worth it. If in a bind, uncertain, I would shake again- see what's going on then to pick out 200 grains. Why even waste the time making sub? Clean spawn, no short cuts.

I agree you want clean spawn, but if you have a bag with a little spot that truly won’t colonize...what’s a qt of bulk sub worth? $.18 or so maybe. Spawn it and see what happens.
We’re not talking about a grow operation here where someone is constantly cycling qt of spawn. He has 2 qt that are like 95%. Probably started with a spore syringe, maybe a little bacterial. The longer they sit the worse the chances of beating the clock. Just my experience after years of growing fungus

Especially for the OP, best chance for success is shaking, what is 3-4 days lost over 3 weeks? In order to help a novice, best advice is to figure out what, if anything is going on now, and not 3 weeks from now. Would you buy a car with a flat tire, and decide to go on a road trip? Plus, he never mentioned if he even shook it.
