Rinse wbs after boil?
    #26692197 - 05/24/20 09:29 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I apologize if this is a silly question but I’ve been searching and reading and I can’t find the answer I’m looking for. After I let my wbs simmer and I pour it in the strainer do I rinse it with hot or cold water? Or can I skip the rinse after simmer? In the tek I read it just says rinse but it doesn’t specify if the water is hot or cold. Again I apologize for asking but I want to know..please help.
Have a great day!!

I rinse before cooking. I don't rinse after because it just slows down how fast the grains dry off from steaming.

That’s what I was thinking but I’ve read in some threads people said to rinse after the simmer to keep it from sticking together n stuff

I love using rye berries but the company I usually order from are out of stock until June 1st... so I’m trying to figure out this wbs deal

It depends on how clean the bird seed is and how you prepped it. If you accidently push the hydration too for, rinsing with cool water can help clean the grain and stop the cooking. Dirty WBS absolutely benefits from a good rinse but it's better to find good wbs. I get mine from a co-op called the grange. It's great and doesn't need rinsed. I just made a bunch of Masters yesterday.

Foomans prep works well but I prefer to pre heat the WBS by letting it soak in hot water as I boil the water for the Tek. Once ready inpour off most the hot soaking water (and floaters) and then dump the boiled water on. I find allowing the boiled water to cool to about 200 to help prevent burst grain.

Alternitively, an overnight soak in hot water works well.

When working with wbs I make sure to rinse it until the water is clear. Then I'll leave it soaking for awhile maybe overnight. In the morning I'll give it one last rinse and simmer in clean water. I never rinse after simmer. Ever.
Them just toss is some couple times while it's steaming dry and use it.

Thanks you guys. You really cleared things up for me. I was really trying to avoid rinsing after the simmer lol.

For the record. I am not rinsing or soaking any grains at the moment. I have done a rinse to remove floaters, leave floaters in. Rinse to remove dirt.

At this point in the game I will bring a PC to a full rolling boil. Add grains and put the lid on. I will let it cool for 30 mins and vary the heat so the presto lock dosnt lock.

At 30 mins I drain and lay of a flat surface to cool. Then load and PC jars.

Just how I'm doing it now. Mostly for the grain water though.

I like fooman’s method but I found 20 min is a little too short for me for using wedges. I tried 27 min the next time but I used LI so they ended up a lil too wet but still workable. I think the 27 would’ve been perfect for a wedge and 20 perfect for LI.

I definitely rinsed before I did the hot soak though so they could dry better.

If you rinse after simmer or boiling water or soak, I recommend you have boiling water ready to do that rinse, that way the water and grain stay nice and hot to steam off.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...
