Oyster Process
    #26692068 - 05/24/20 08:21 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey y'all, I realize I'm not the first to ask for an oyster tek, but the links in the threads I looked up have been deleted and was thinking it couldn't hurt to see if anyone knows of anything new.

In lieu of a Tek, I could probably just get on with minimal guidance on this post here.

Although I'm still working on eliminating contains and whatnot, I'm quite familiar with the process of growing cubes. I do spores to Agar to Rye to CVG and usually get ok results.

I recently decided I was gonna go ahead a give Blue Oysters I try, so I got a spore syringe from my regular supplier.

Is the process more or less the same? I've heard they're less prone to contains, do I need to mess with agar or can I reasonably expect decent results just injecting it into a rye jar?

I'm also reading about straw as a substrate. What's the process there? It seems like most folks don't like using tubs because FAE, but how SHOULD I go about setting up a growing container?

Welcome to edibles,

What you got was most likely a proven culture, not a spore syringe.  So you don't need to go to agar.  Take the syringe straight to rye grain jars.

Spawn those to your bulk, which we'll decide on...

Where do you live?  Only asking because fruiting outdoors is easiest.

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.

Why would you think he got a proven culture? He said he got the syringe from his regular supplier of cubes. I don't know of any good suppliers that even sell syringes. I am not trying to argue. I am just wondering if you know something I don't. I am just trying to get info. It is always good to have options.

WinterOwned. You do realize blue oysters are a cold-weather mushroom don't you? Although some still do well in warmer temps.

Because nobody sells edible cultures in spores when there's perfectly good cultures going around

The only reason people sell cubes in spore is because it's illegal to sell live cultures.

Take SporeWorks for example, probably the longest running shroomery sponsor I can remember.  Here's his Blue Oyster mushroom culture syringe.

Now I'm sure you can go find someone selling blue oyster spores, but if you do, don't buy from them as it's silly

I would have given him Amycel 3015 for half that. I guess you learn something new every day. I only buy grain spawn so I don't know anything about syringes at all.

Thanks for the heads up!!

Syringes can be SUPER handy if you haven't gotten a flow hood yet, inoculate jars right in open air, especially for oysters and other aggressive species.  I used to love working with LC in syringes, even if you have a flow hood sometimes it's faster
