Hiya,
SWIM's been traveling down the agar path as best as SWIM can and has managed to find all the information they required without posting - they have a presto 23qt and all.
However now SWIM needs help identifying what's on their plate(s).
Short description: LME Agar, 10 g of each in 500ml distilled water, 15psi for 25 minutes and left in vessel overnight.
SWIM purchased an APE swab from an American vendor - unsure if swabs can be sterile, hence SWIM's confusion. - swabbed 4 days ago
SWIM swabbed two plates (first time swabbing), one quite hard [you can see the zigzags - SWIM is new and won't zigzag again], and the other quite softly, before then sticking the end of the swab in the final agar plate.
Plates incubated at 19c - 23c for 4 days
SWIM says the swabbed plates show no sign of any growth of anything at all, however the plate containing the swab tip took off very quickly, with growth radiating out in a circle from the swab tip- SWIM can't tell if this is cobweb or mycelia.
Photos attached
PLS HELP
Questions: If the other agar plates are still not contaminated despiTe vigorous swabbing, is it more likely that this is mycelia and not cobweb, and that the spores on the other plates simply didn't take?
Or is it more likely that the cobweb required the swab to take in the first place?

It's hard to say what it is but it doesn't look healthy.
Also, don't SWIM. It just makes whatever you write hard to read and everyone knows who you're talking about. It won't help you in court either.

Alright cool, noted.
Do agar plates require air? These have SFDs covering a single 1/4" hole in the center of the lid - is it possible I need to add another hole?
Could this kind of unhealthy growth be the result of poorly prepared agar? - I have a suspicion that the LME I used in this batch may have caramelized, maybe caused by over-heating while mixing LME before pouring, the agar lost the food coloring in it and I've since made a better batch by barely heating the mixture before PCing.
Also - are sterile swabs a thing??
Thanks for your help!!!

Agar plates do require air, but a really tiny amount.
Sterile swabs are a thing, but not anymore once you put spores on it.
Since those plates are only 4 days old, I'd keep waiting for growth in swabbed areas that haven't shown any yet.
