Somethings not right, can anyone help point me in the right direction? * 1
    #26691208 - 05/23/20 08:39 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,

First time grow, going from a random bag, took a crushed veil to put on agar. Made about 3 generations of agar transfers, then put a slice into a uncle bens bag. After about a month broke those into my interpretation of how Bods unmodified shoebox tek would be, about 1:1.5 rice to cooked coco coir. Of three boxes one started fruiting in 12 days, one started fruiting in 15, and the last has not started.

The first to fruit basically grew one large mushroom connected to another 1/4 its size and 4-5 more small mushrooms.

The second grew one patch of 6-7 mushrooms all about the size of the smaller one in the first box.

Number 3 has not fruited, now at 21 days. This box looks like what the colonized rice did when I broke open the package to do the spawn to bulk, essentially one massive white block. I have been misting, trying to not let anything pool. RH is ~20% where I live, temps range between 70-80* during the past three weeks.

I am assuming my surface conditions were awful, but would appreciate any outside input to help possibly save these three tubs or to learn for the next three. I will include images of the 2nd and 3rd boxes, the 3rd is considerably more white.

For reference, here is a picture of the one large fruit:

Would soaking them in water overnight potentially save them? Moving forward, if misting with a lid cracked leads to only about 1 hour of time with visible droplets should I keep lid closed more often? Thank you for the insight

I would soak them and after which you'll need to maintain proper fruiting environments which includes misting.

Thank you very much for the opinions, the starter guide links to bods tek, which says if you don’t understand proper surface conditions you need to learn elsewhere. Are there any teks either of you know of that specifically go over surface conditions?

Surface conditions are more learned by experience. Use your finger, your nose, and eyes to discern hydration/surface conditions.
Mycelium looks dry? feels dry? when you press on it does it release moisture or not?
These are questions you must ask yourself.
Is my humidity at the right level? Is my mycelium at the right temp?
By asking yourself these things you'll answer most surface condition questions.

It just takes a few successful tubs to learn surface conditions. They really depend on the culture, the way you prepped your coi, and the environment outside the tub.

Also if you want to actually grow a large amount of mushrooms it’s cheaper in the long run to use actual grain sterilized in jars and not uncle bens bags. I assume you have a PC since you poured agar, no? If you bought pre poured plates then you should really invest in jars, grain, and agar supplies (IE petris, agar, nutrients)

I have super low rh also, usually 10-15%.

With shoeboxes I add a little top layer of coir when I spawn and then usually leaving the lid on the whole time keeps conditions good.

These are all questions I will consider when evaluating, thank you, I had been hesitant to touch anything before. So a gentle press should release some moisture, correct?

No, I wanted to try as ‘simply’ as possible for this first attempt so no PC, although I have quickly fallen in love with the process so this will be an obvious addition. For my agar I boiled up 1.5 tablespoons of powder for 1 cup of water, then poured into mini ziplock Tupperware squares, eight per cup. I would let them sit in a SAB with hole punched tops that had Micropore holes for 2 days, any pours not completely clear at this time were discarded (only one of 40 or so at this point). Then when transferring I would hold these up to a light to see areas of most consistent mycelium, and anything not completely clear I considered a contam (a few at the start had slightly yellow/brown spots). Only when a pour was completely clear was it transferred and then eventually added to grain.

Cheers to this post, I had seen but my boxes seemed to take a path not outlined so I was not sure if it applied. I think I will need to modify my boxes with holes and Micropore to regulate my humidity like is done here, I appreciate you pointing me back to this tek. I think it will be valuable for my climate.

Excellent idea and I appreciate the insight. The teks I had read all seemed to turn their nose to the top layer of coir, but with this new info I think it could serve an excellent purpose in drier climates. I will absolutely do a few variations on top layer depth for my new few boxes to see if I might find a sweet spot for myself. The concept, however, seems to make perfect sense.
