I saw a turtle * 1
    #26690929 - 05/23/20 06:14 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I was walking around the lake near my town center and I found turtles in the water just swimming around. Though they were the ones with the narrow snouts, soft shells I think they’re called. I thought it was a treat since I rarely see those ones around.

Seems like on my walks there’s always something new to see.

I feel the same way. I got a video of a chipmunk.

There's always something new to see.

I wish I saw a chipmunk some time. But I do get wood peckers and the occasional vulture and osprey

There was a badger poking around in the field next to the dike,
made me regret not carrying my camera as much anymore

I keep my iPhone with me all the time, mostly for capturing perfect moments in nature. I have tons of pictures with the full moon overlooking fresh snow, those are my favorites.

I’ve never seen a hummingbird though, it’s on my list.

Do not personally own a smart phone, but do have a high-end camera with a decent zoom lens on it most of the time
basically unless doing macro photography, then have to have my 60 mm prime macro

fell out of carrying it and using it as much after high school tho
started to feel weird carrying it everywhere; was attempting to present male at that time, and had this background constant thought of "guys with cameras are considered creeps; if only you had been born female you could pursue your hobby"

of more recent issue has been my walking with a cane; quite cumbersome to try and deal with while also using a camera
but working on building up enough leg muscle to feel confident walking without the cane again
really want to get back in to photography in full, rather than just having it be a tucked away hobby

hummingbirds are great and come to the feeder all summer -- do not end up taking pictures of them because the feeder is artificial
growing some plants that they feed on in the wild this year tho, so maybe that will provide new opportunity
have a video of a hummingbird hawkmoth somewhere; those are a total trip, they hover and appear like a hummingbird but a close enough look reveals them just being a fluffy (daytime?) moth with a retracting mouth to sip from flowers in flight

In Northern Illinois we sometimes see fairly large hard shelled turtles crossing the road. Since they are not snapping turtles, you are supposed to pick them up by the side of their shell and carry them to the side of the road they are headed toward. Since I'm not completely sure they are not snapping turtles I just stop my car and let them take their time crossing the road.

You can do the same thing with snappers honestly. I've done it before, however dangerous. I usually clap my hands and tell them to fuck off and they scurry away. There's a fair bit of swampy kinda stuff not too far from my house so I see snappers and painteds fairly often. I have a big pond on my property and every year there's little holes all over the place on my year where the babies crawled out of. I took some baby snappers in a year or two ago because they were just dying in my shed which is a fair distance from anything turtle related. They couldn't move. They were like the size of a quarter or a nickle and when I got rid of them in the spring they were the size of a big apple. If they weren't so demanding they would make really cool pets. You think a snapper is neat until you see one without calcified shells and covered in algae/mold. They're like little dinosaurs

You can usually tell snappers from the mouth structure, it looks more like a vice from what I can gather and the shells are different too. You can help those guys out just pick them up way beyond the mouth. They’re also a bit more ornery than most turtles and will fight you if you try to help. Also I think they get pretty big too, but I haven’t seen any in the wild.

Snapping turtles can not fully retract their heads. :themoreyouknow:

Been seeing a lot of really small neon yellow birds.

I think it's American Goldfinch.

Yeah it might be. They're like the smallest birds I've ever seen.
