I got a big old Maple tree too! This one is in the neighbors yard and it's massive! He piles all the fallen branches and rotten wood up around his tree when he mows, so I'm going to see if I can take it all off of his hands!

Now, should I just keep laying wood on top of what I already have going, or occasionally mix it around down underneath all the good mycellium growth?

The shape of the mulched wood is very important. Shredded mulch doesn’t work nearly as well as chipped mulch. The best stuff is square chips about 1” x 1” x 1/4”

Yeah, relic told me to use the wood chips meant for grilling with.
But soaking, and then beating the hell out of the woods chips, didn't seem like my cup of tea, so I opted to do it the natural way.

I got all kinds of rotting wood chips, sticks, twigs, etc right in my own yard, so I'll just break all up into smaller pieces, and start adding that on occasion.

Thanks for all the great tips guys!

I have strawberries planted in my mulch beds, they do an excellent job of protecting pins and grow well in poor substrates like woodchips. And ifsomeone sees you they think you are picking strawberries.

Cool finds. I’ve found some like that too. Almost a metallic blue. I’ve had others that turn that color as they dry under a fan.

I grew Cyans in CA with small sticks & mulch chips from a park. I used Peter McCoy's method of low-tek cold pasteurization, and it colonized like a motherfucker:

To kill off whatever is already living on the substrate (your yard sticks & bits), you should cold pasteurize the chips & sticks by submerging completely in water (I used a beer cooler with plastic & bricks on it) for 2+ weeks, until you get that stinky swamp smell. This is an indication that anaerobic bacteria has taken over.

When you're ready to inoculate, you just dump out the swamp water & spread the chips out on a tarp or something for 10-15 minutes & drain. This kills the anaerobic bacteria, and since the other stuff from before is dead from being underwater for 2 weeks, these chips are effectively pasteurized & the mushroom mycelia you add to it will be ripping through it with almost no competition. Just mix it together with your colonized bits & add it to your bed or flowerpot...

The olentangy river flooding receded and I got to go check out the area.  New derbis piles way further back from the river than ever seen before.  Sadly most of my ovoid patches got ripped up.  A few places maybe 10% of it managed to hold on some how even being under feet of rushing water. I rounded up boxelder wood bits to recover them.  Was crazy to see debris from the flood stuck up in the trees 6-10ft over head.

I boiled up and then rinsed apple and hickory wood pieces intended for BBQ and used a bunch of SE ohio ovoid stem butts to inoculate it.  Only three weeks later outside there is an amazing amount of colonization already.  Disappointed the freak big flood wiped my patches out but going to use these as the mother patch to start making new ones out in the flood plain.. maybe just a bit further back from the water this time.

Wait, I might just go ahead before it's late and not even wait, you have inspired me even further

Thanks bro! The MD spot we walked is doing pretty good this year.  Not quite as good as when you got to walk that stretch, but still way better than last spring.  It'd be awesome if you were up this way this year, but hope you find a good spot and see lots of clusters wherever you can make it to!  :bigblunt:

I was out yesterday. Everything is done. All I found were tiny single fruits.
Maybe this rain will bring some back but I think the season is pretty much over.
