Bay Area doctors seeing more suicides during coronavirus stay-at-home order
Quote:
Suicides in one Northern California community are outpacing deaths related to the coronavirus amid a shelter-in-place order
"We've never seen numbers like this in such a short period of time," Dr. Mike deBoisblanc said. "I mean, we've seen a year's worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks."

I would expect suicides to outpace deaths from covid during a lockdown meant to keep covid deaths at a minimum. Yes it sucks that people have to stay at home and not socialize, and this will lead to more suicides, but the lockdown is also preventing death. This article just seems like it’s trying to convince the reader that the lockdowns are bad. That’s pretty much Fox News’ editorial stance on the matter.

Guy is also a surgeon speaking for all docs. Doc does elective surgery, seems more likely he's needing more victims, I mean money.

Fox isn't the only one running this story and no one has the numbers of attempts, death by suicide or covid related deaths that I've seen. Yeah, sounds like advertising cloaked in shitty journalism.

In some cases, the lockdown is preventing death. In other cases, it is facilitating death.

Clearly. I'm guessing that reopening will result in new spikes of cases, but ultimately I think we are going to have to bite the bullet and do it. If we reopen now or in the next month, the economy will suffer for a year or more, probably more. If we wait till an effective vaccine is developed it will last for many years.
I recently subscribed to the Wall Street Journal because they are offering 12 weeks for $12. Everyday there are stories about these companies that closed temporarily and now they have decided they're done. These job losses will hit lower income people disproportionately. So many people will lose health insurance when they need it most. Even the more prestigious companies are looking to go lean.

Russia may release a vaccine by summer's end. I'm not saying we should do that, but it is interesting...
Russian scientists hope to begin HUMAN TESTING on Covid-19 vaccine within weeks, having tried it on themselves first

The very same researchers who tested a Covid-19 vaccine on their own bodies say they’re hopefully weeks away from starting human trials. If everything goes smoothly, the sought-after cure may enter production by summer’s end.

Why would someone even assume these suicides are from the lockdown? People are losing loved ones, but no it must be because they have no one to talk to. If only the internet existed.

What would you assume is causing "a year's worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks"?

There is a myriad of reasons why people say, fuck this shit show. Suicides have already been on a steep rise before this.
Maybe Nancy and Mitch can enlighten us on this subject over a bowl of ice cream and a pack of Marlboro reds.

Give me some, numbers of the attempts, there's no way of knowing without if the number in the last four weeks is significant or just a blip, and there's other details we don't know, what kind of attempts were these as compared to the attempts that occur during the year. Without these details this story is just shit journalism. Not fake, just shit, tells you nothing except that the publishers of the shit are shithead sensationalist shits, shouldn't be writing for a living in the news world, but maybe writing shit romance novels for the YA reading impaired market.

Do you think doctors are lying that they're seeing more suicides than ever? And the suicide hotlines are also lying about calls being up 100%?
I guess it's possible.

I'm thinking some number, rather than an unspecified number would be necessary for me to speculate on the meaning of these events. The doctors aren't being forthcoming or the papers aren't relaying the count, so somebody is hiding data.

People may be committing more suicide because they finally realized the government doesn't give a shit about their well being?
Lack of ability to socialize, lack of ability to get mental health care they need.
Research on seasonal effects on suicide rates suggests that the prevalence of suicide is greatest during the late spring and early summer months,
