Vertical or Horizontal flow hood?
    #26690361 - 05/23/20 01:06 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I bought a 24x24 hepa filter and a dayton fan.

Im thinking if I should build a vertical or horizontal flow hood.

What are your takes on this?

Most folks have build vertical, so that should answer your question...
With vertical hood you can keep ur agar plates really close to the filter and keep contamination to min.

No, I meant vertical.  Filter is placed vertically. But air moves horizontally
filter vertically  ( I )
filter horizontally ( - )

Yeah, but flow hoods are not named after the way the filter is positioned.  Rather, the direction of the laminar flow.  A vertical filter is called a horizontal laminar flow hood because the laminar flow is horizontal.

Yes, sir.

As soon as I replied I thought "Oh, but air is moving perpendicular to the filter so I might got that wrong.."

I have vertical flowhood and it works like a charm. If built properly both are more than suitable for anything you may want to do. I inoculated bags in vertical with no issues, once you figure how air moves and geometry of what you are doing its easy.

Both kick ass compared to SAB.

Most people would go for horizontal, tho. I think it has something to do with Stamets, not sure.

But I think with vertical you get more work space.
