Yep that’s how it should be.

I love when I get it right like that especially cuz with the top layer there’s like a half inch of rhizo fingers going to the surface too.

Please enlighten me. What are you doing to help this happen. My entire coir is white when I look from the side of my tub

Well...nothing really, it just grows like that.

I don’t have usually take picture of the sides too often but you can see it in those.

I just pack the edges down a little bit. Some of depends on genetics but as long as the surface is good it’ll just grow that way.

The second to last picture in my signature with the close up you can see the rhizo going through the casing layer.

Yeah it has more to do with introducing fruiting at the right time and less with genetics. The old way was mix it or layer it depending on how far back you go. Then close it up and put it in the dark till it is fully colonized. Which is misleading but people would do that to prevent contamination which was always the spawn and not the coir.

Newer refined version is to mix it and put into fruiting conditions. I like to give it a day or two with the lid locked. Then open it up and either flip the lid or just allow PAE (caps!).

Ok nice, ill try that. I been keeping the lid closed for like 10 days...Ill try to reduce that next time, see how it goes. Also, gonna put a liner on, i see you have one in your pics.

Just wanted to update incase anyone curious.

Here are the first flushes. I noticed that the modified tub fruited about 2 days earlier and had much larger mushrooms. Genetics probably a major factor so this isnt the best comparison but im very happy with the results so far. Will continue to test both these methods.

Crazy amount of side pinning happening so this is def #1 issue to resolve right now.

Modified tub

Unmodified tub

Cheers all

I'm having similar difficulties every time I try using unmodified tubs. I've had great success with modified ones, but exact same scenario as OP.
I've left the lid on for a week + at times (in the sealing direction, but without the hinges locked),and surface conditions are perfect. Out of fear of not enough FAE I've played with leaving the lid slightly ajar (in the natural lid position) and flipping the lid. Both experimentations have always led to the sub drying out/bruising/stalling. I can't seem to find the magic spot with these tubs.

Any extra advice you can lend a fellow cheesehead here?
When misting, one should mist the top of the sub and sides of the tub?
Am I correct in assuming that leaving the lid on in it's natural way (though with hinges unlocked) would not provide enough FAE?

Thanks

It depends a lot on your environment.

I have really low rh in my room and even tiny adjustments to how open the lid is make a big difference.

You just gotta experiment and see what works. I always start where it won’t get enough air and make adjustments from there. Getting too much air and drying the surface out can be really tough to come back from.
