Iowa report
    #2669014 - 05/12/04 04:34 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

NOrtheast Iowa has been incredible for morel hunting this season , my family has harvested over 10 pounds on our own and bought over 150 pounds at our shop. It is almost time to start hunting on the river islands. Aside from that I found a neat mushroom I am not familiar with the other day in the woods and I was hoping someone can ID it for me so here she is .

thanks and good luck in mushroom hunting

If it weren't so distinctive, you wouldn't have any hope of getting an ID with just that photo. It helps a lot to see the underside of the mushroom and to know the spore print color.

But, that one is distinctive. It's Polyporus squamosus, also known as Dryad's Saddle. They are technically edible when young, but not known for being flavorful.

Happy mushrooming!

Shit no one around here has found anything, I've found 2 fist size ones and that is two more than I've heard any hunter I talk to has found.

Btw, I live in the Northwest part of our state.
