New to Mushrrom Cultivation, looking for advice on grain jars
    #26689629 - 05/23/20 03:51 AM (2 months, 16 days ago)

Hi folks, so my first batch of grain jars didn't go as planned.... there was a small amount of mycelium beginning to form in a couple of them then it just stopped.... I used 1cc of spore liquid from my liquid culture.

I did note quite a bad smell when opening the jars, I pressure cooked them for 15 minutes as stated in the mushroom growing bible but perhaps this was not enough? I've had some grain soaking for 24 hours and am ready to pressure cook them today.

Also I know going straight to grains perhaps wasn't the best idea so I'm switching to PF tek method which I hear is more user friendly and will feed back in a couple of days on that as I should have some growth soon.

How long should I really be pressure cooking jars for? I read contradicting advice in some places.

15 minutes? lmao ......
try 2 hours with grains next time and it might not go to shit. maybe this growing bible that you speak of ment 15 psi and not minutes.

Yes! I do sterilize mine for 1.5 hrs at 15 psi, that's what I read and it works. Grain jars as well as PF tek jars. Also make sure the rye is not too wet before PCing, that's also an issue people are reporting.

If you have all the equipment and the LC I would stay with monotub, it's not much harder then PF tek. And yields much more.

Minor issue: Did you make the LC yourself? You might want to check on Agar before using to check for contaminants. LC is prone to contamination. If you do a quart jar of rye I'd use 2-3 cc, should be faster. The

Yeah, I'm doing the rye grain exactly how it says on the guide linked to me on here, I made the LC myself, I'm pretty certain that's absolutely not the issue, definitely my grain prep was dreadful to put it mildly............ I'm also redoing my PF tek as they were not pressure cooked long enough also. Grains have been boiled and let to dry and have passed the toilet roll test and they look way better than my previous attempt. Gonna pressure cook each jar for 1.5 hours at 15psi

My grain was definitely too damp and not sterilised properly. That was 100% the issue.

I'm trying some mono tubs along with PF Tek, my incubator is all finished too.

Incubator?

Colonization temperatures should be between 75-82F for fastest growth. Higher and you will attract contamination while slowing down growth aswell.
Room temperature is fine so jars will still colonize at temps below 75f just not as fast but is alot more favourable than colonizing at higher temperatures which make substrates more prone to contamination

i suggest colonizing at 75f for best results

they will colonize fine as low as 68f, hell probably even lower but colonization speeds slow down.
just dont get them over 82F it should be fine

If the book you're using really said to pressure cook them for only 15 minutes, it is likely to be filled with other outdated information. Take a while to peruse the cultivation section of the forum and use the search function to find more information.
