Sorry to backtrack but...say again?
What's the difference? 10-15 years of rigorous training and education, several ethical and legal obligations...are we really going over this? What an absurd comparison to make.

Now all the sudden everyone's trusting the CDC rather than the WHO. CDC says what we want to hear about masks. WHO says don't wear them in public.
Trump blasted the WHO. People got asshurt. Now those same asshurt people are discrediting the WHO.

social distancing is basically gone in houston. the attitude has shifted over the course of the last 2 weeks. I've been going to a park a few times a week just to relax in the evening. Had been maybe 2 or 3 people there, now there are over 100 again, almost none wearing a mask- myself included, to be honest. I hate wearing a mask outside of work, I'll just have to find a less busy park to go to. There is traffic on the roads again. most people still wear masks indoors but the percentage is decreasing.
somehow things never got all that bad here. still going with the guess of "it's seasonal like other coronaviruses" and our respiratory infection season is shorter than those up north. could also be a strain difference. we definitely have a high comorbidity population so it isn't that.

man it's crazy to me that people are still wearing jackets there. it's in the 90s here, half the dudes at the park are shirtless lol. Just checked the weather today, UV index of 10. normally I would be concerned about that but I think it might be working in our favor

Reporter takes his mask down to address the camera. If you touch your mask it has to come off go in the trash and then you wash your hands.
Please touch your mask and put it back on to come inside the store. Fucking lol

isnt it crazy how sometimes the same people who do right things also do wrong things??
in any case I believe that has been the WHO recommendation all along, wear masks only if taking care of someone who is sick. please correct me if I am wrong.
This is one case in which I dont give a shit about the WHO recommendation. People keep saying "The mask is for other people", or "It doesn't work anyway because you use it wrong". Yeah it's great that the mask potentially stops other people from getting sick from me, but at the end of the day, the mask I wear is for me and for my family and close friends. So that I don't get sick and give it to others I hang out with without a mask. And I wear it correctly. The WHO recommendation is probably great for places where there arent enough masks to go around but that is not really the case here.

Why? It's just another contaminated surface like any. You clean your hands after touching it and before touching any of your orifices, and you disinfect the mask between uses. Leaving it out in the sun for a couple of days is almost certainly sufficient. I've also heard of docs just baking them in the oven.

A hairstylist in Missouri saw 91 clients while coming to work symptomatic. She has tested positive for coronavirus. Both the stylist and the client were masked. They're looking at this case to see the real efficacy of masks.
They've implemented contact tracing, but the governor says they can't afford a lot more cases like this. They just don't have the contact tracers.

It's cool to pick and choose what to listen to and say that the other stuff is just smart people got it wrong. It does make life easier.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if bad mask protocol helps to spread corona. Especially when people half wear them on the boardwalk. Touch them and everything else. Then put them back on to go in a store. Take them off again. And so on.
Especially the homemade cloth petri dish ones.
When y'all make infographics on a .edu or .gov site let me know. Or if shroomery for some reason has better info than the WHO then idk ..

So I've heard. "If you discount what they have to say you're a trumpkin"

Once your mask is on it stays on while you're in public. No pulling it down at all ever period.

Has your state done any large scale antibody testing? I think in Boston they're estimating 10% have been infected, NYC was was around 20 I believe. It got into nursing homes before either city was prepared which definitely spiked the deaths... one VA in Mass had 70 deaths.
I don't think Texas ever had the same sort of big outbreak before they locked things down, so now that things are opening up I can't see the numbers not surging unless there is something else going on. I know nothing about how the cities are structured though, Boston/NYC are basically the perfect environments for a virus to spread.

No, we havent. The way I can see us not having such an outbreak right now is that, like I said, I suspect it is a seasonal virus and the season here is short. Texas reopened a lot of stuff weeks ago. We have had a bit of an increase but nothing major. As I understand it, about half of the 200 people who have died here were nursing home residents, which may also imply that we have a relatively weak strain here that is typically only fatal for the highly vulnerable. At present we have far more empty beds than occupied beds, and I believe we now have the capacity to handle an outbreak significantly greater than this one. It will be sad to watch it happen but at this point given my observations of the behavior of people in this country I feel it is inevitable, even if it doesnt happen until next winter.
And yes i agree that the city structure, density, and transportation were the most important factors in determining initial outbreak spread. We had early cases here but almost all had gotten it elsewhere and hadnt appeared to spread it significantly to others
However I have two uncles in rural virginia who died from this. I suspect they got it at church. Neither was healthy but they werent in nursing homes or anything. One in early 60s, one in early 70s. Meanwhile lots of 80+ year olds are surviving here. Weaker strain again maybe. I really hope it isnt just that they comparatively suck at medical care in other places. Although one of those guys died suddenly of a heart attack at home so there wasnt anything that could have been done

So Wuhan original strain gets out easy with near global distribution. but regions already have their own sub-strains with no conflicting strain overlap. Makes sense.
Wouldn't Houston have many strains if the virus has mutated a bunch already

We might, but if the really weaks circulate here first we might be able to ride it out and pick up a good amount of immunity. As i understand it The deadly strains dont circulate as well because they make people sicker faster. "As well" is different from place to place. A lot of people can catch a deadly strain in a short time in a packed subway car. We dont have anything like that here
