Gymnopilus junonius? Safe to eat?
    #26689587 - 05/23/20 03:02 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys,

I've already posted about this, but have since harvested the fruitbodies and want to get some more info + another positive ID. I'm quite sure I've found Gymnopilus junonius.

Some info
  • Found in SW England growing on a buried tree stump
  • Strong smell of mushroom
  • Rusty brown spores

Pics

The mushrooms are currently in my dehydrator. I understand that they might not be active since they're not staining blue. Although, I have read some reports that even the non-staining ones pack a punch.

My main concern, however, isn't about whether or not they are active, but about the neurotoxin oligoisoprenoid gymnopilin. Does anyone know about this? Is it found in all fruitbodies? And, more importantly, how dangerous is it?

I'm game for trying an active, but if there's a risk of poisoning then I'll give it a miss.

Gymnopilus junonius is not a hallucinogenic species, according to recent research. In other words, you won't trip if you eat these.

Check this post by Alan Rockefeller for more details.

In the third photo that big cap shows some blueish colours, also the base of that biggest stem?

But yea, G. junonius is not considered hallucinogenic.

Yes, I see that too, now that you mention it.

Hey, OP, chance of getting a close up shot of that cap in better lighting - preferably outdoors?

Hey guys, thanks for the responses.

Anglerfish, I remember you posted that link on my other thread, thanks for responding to this ID request as well.

I've posted this updated request on 4 different forums and am also in contact with the identifier of my local foraging group. So far, I've had varied suggestions: Gymnopilus aeruginosus, G. junonius and Kuehneromyces mutabilis.

I'm not too bothered about whether they're active or not now, this is more for curiosity.

Here are some more pics of the cap in daylight:

To be honest, I don't think the caps are staining blue, it was probably just the light. Nevertheless, I'm interested to hear what you think.

It's not Kuehneromyces mutabilis. That print looks brownish instead of the rusty orange brown I'm used to seeing. They could be Gymnopilus but my initial impression was Pholiota but I'm not comfortable with that one either.

I thought that Gymnopilus jujonius was active just not all of them, I was under the impression that only the Australian Gymnopilus jujonius was not active or maybe it was in the Southern hemisphere.
