Soy hulls substitue
    #26689465 - 05/23/20 12:48 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I can't get soy hulls (master mix) in EU. So, what's best substitute for it?

Also, second question... Pelletised straw is good for oysters? I am looking something more easy and quick, than cooking bales of straw, which is really a mess.

I can't tell you a replacement for soy hulls.

Straw pellets do work. They aren't a real substitute for straw because it behaves a little different. Some people say that you can get away with less of a strict technique with them because they are pasteurized at production. I have a few straw pellet jars running as a test for spawn and technique and can't say that seems to be true for my batches. Everything that wasn't pressure cooked had a lot of different stuff growing. The pressure cooked ones not so much.

Can you get hardwood fuel pellets? If so I used to use this recipe...

I used espoma chicken manure but you can leave that out if you can't find it and be careful with the water because all fuel pellet brands have different water content. All the weights are in LBS although the water is in liters. Because my flow meter reads in liters.

Yes, I can get hardwood fuel pellets.

So, I've read rice bran is the best (although I don't want use this word, but I like to see some papers/studies). Any side to side with different brans?

Chicken poo is pelletised/granulated I see. So like nutrient powder for plants? Can I use aged poo?

What about mineral nutrients with the same NPK as yours chicken poo?

Oh... also, how much yield do you get with that mix? Can you post with all your mushrooms please?

It has been a long time since I used the recipe. But I believe I was betting about 1.5 lbs per 5 lb block 1st flush.

That's nice. Do you use that substrate for oysters and kings too?

I have never grown king so I don't know if it is suitable for kings. Bran is a common supplement though.

What's best and easiest substrate (looking for yield) for oysters, besides straw?

HWFP will give you the best yield and they are the easiest especially if you use soy hulls. Straw is nowhere near HWfP.

I will try your recipe, I found the same NPK ratio of chicken pellets. Because I can't get soy hulls. Can't wait to test it. Thank you.

It took me a long time to find soy hulls. It was not easy but if you can get them it is well worth the effort. You will get a bigger yield and do less work. So any time you spend finding soy hulls will pay big dividends in the long run.
