Modified vs Unmodified Tub Experiment/Issues
    #26688296 - 05/22/20 02:17 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all,

So this is my 3rd and 4th tub, still very nooby but I am getting the hang of it.

These are my issues; perhaps some more experience growers could provide some insight.

1. The modified tub - seems to be controlling its microclimate much better, it has had nice droplets on the surface without need for misting or any fuckery, pretty much set and forget
Vs.
The unmodified tub - dried out when i opened up the top a little more (i use 4 clips to control the space between the lid and tub as i found when i flip it, it doesnt sit properly), so i need to mist this guy and keep an eye out because the surface droplets evaporate pretty quick, but i also dont want water to be pooling (this was happening initially), so its a tricky one.

2. Side pinning -  both tubs are experiencing lots of side pins vs. surface pins, i mean i am seeing nice pre-growth up top but what can i do to minimize these side pins, i feel if these all grew on top both tubs would be killing it. I tried to compact the coir when i was making the tub, but it did shrink quite a bit and the space is being filled with side pins. Is a liner the only way to fix this?

Here are some pics of both tubs showing the sides pins as well as the surface.

Thanks in advanced!

I like the premise of the experiment. I am unable to answer your question but am considering doing the same experiment. I will wait until I have a decent isolate to reduce variables. Looking forward to your results.

I have an extremely dry grow room so this probably isn’t the same for most people, but with shoeboxes and underbed tubs cracking the lid a few mms can make a huge difference.

There’s definitely a sweet spot for me but it took me a long time to be able to look at the surface and just eyeball the lid placement successfully.

Having something lifting the up would basically be open air for me.

I usually don’t go further than placing the lid on top of the tub or occasionally turning it a quarter inch.

Try moving it such a small amount it seems dumb and leave it for the day and check it out. Eventually you’ll figure out something that works.

Yes, I think relative humidity is a huge factor. Summer just started here so hopefully the increase in humidity will prevent the unmodified tub from drying out too quickly.

Tubs in general are specifically made for growing cubes indoors with any RH.

All tubs work just fine for me in Wisconsin winter with the furnace running my home is constantly under 30% rh

That's why i grow in tubs.

Your comparison will be more useful when you try it again after nailing the growing skills. So you can get a canopy with anyone's tub. Though youll learn quickly actually trying so good work

Ime liners work to some extent with sidepins, but it doesn't eliminate them entirely. I get them with and without liners, but they're fewer and more easily manageable with a liner.

Both can be used equally well. I think that the unmoded tub is just easier. Side pinning can happen at full colonization of the substrate. When it shrinks you create a nice little area on the sides for pinning. But it is all about how and when you put into fruiting.

Here is an example of a shoebox with 0 side pins. Just the top layer.

I didn't let the substrate fully colonize before introducing evaporation and all the pins formed on top.

Personally I don’t worry about side pins and just use a liner. Less to worrry about or think about. It also makes harvest easy and clean up easy. Side pins on one tub ain’t bad. Multiply that times 10 and you will be

I’d rather spend the time spent on cleaning up messy fruits and broken up subs by making more spawn.

And instead of wasting time and plastic making liners I just level my substrates so i don't get side pins or hardly any

Nice thing about plastic tubs and healthy substrates is there's nothing to clean at the end of the grow. You dump the block out and rinse then wipe with a towel and it's ready for another grow

Kitchen sink and $2 of hose and you can float a substrate in 90 seconds. Harvest the entire 8 ounce flush in well under 2 minutes. Have the water dumped back out in 2 minutes if you siphon or 2 seconds if you're done with the grow and just literally dump it out.

Harvesting the old way took forever

Even in shoeboxes it's a PITA. Need good scissors like those fiskars eats repping.

Fuck cutting liners.trash bags work perfect. Already made. One tub ok it looks cool. But No one wants to fill 20 tubs with water to harvest unless you plan to go swimming afterwards :lol:

Cutting hundreds of liners also adds up.

4 at a crack was no problem. Unless you're worried about wasting water.

4 should be fine. But process also depends on production level. I use the liners like straps or handles in the corner. Takes less than a second to lift it and put on the lid or table. Hacksaw fruits then put it back in. No dumping water needed. Clean up is also easy with a liner. I flip the trash bag up over the sub and then use it for my trash afterwards. Dual use.

I have been dumping my shoeboxes outside. But I live in the country so it makes it easier. All the raccoons and squirls and bird love spent grain sub. They all out here tripping balls.

@ bodhisatta

How hard to you compact the coir when you are initially setting up your tubs? I noticed the gap is like a half inch from the coir shrinking...lots of room for the microclimate and sidepins. Maybe i didnt press it down enough from the start.

Also, those pics are impressive af...ill need to get better genetics before I am anywhere close to that, but nice to see what to strive for.

Its crazy how little mycelium you have on the coir and just a lair on the very top...

Yep that’s how it should be.

I love when I get it right like that especially cuz with the top layer there’s like a half inch of rhizo fingers going to the surface too.
