Do Subs only grow in suburbs?! Having trouble in the forest

Hi! I'm starting to get very frustrated with hunting for Subaeruginosa in forests around Melbourne. I've been hunting for 30+ hours this season, and ironically the only patch I have found was by accident in the suburbs.
As far as I can tell, I have the right type of forest (eucalyptus, dead wood on the ground):

There has been plenty of rain, and I have passed over (without hyperbole) *thousands* of brown mushrooms that might be Subs, but never turn out to be. Some have the wrong cap or gills or stem or whatever and are easy to pass on, but the others never ever end up bruising blue:

Here are my own subs in my small but reliable suburb patch, that I know are subs (because they bruise blue when I pick them and I go on a journey through the clouds when I eat them), and anything remarkably similar in appearance to these turns out to be nothing:

So I feel like I can't have just been unlucky, I must be doing something systematically wrong or they are just incredibly hard to find in the forest...
So my question is, do any of you hunt in much more secluded forests / national parks and have success?

My best spots are around outer bush suburbs of Melbourne... 1.5 hour drive... you need to know the secret spots but they love cold and wet gum tree bark areas.

I feel like I am searching in similar areas then lol... (I'm not sure how accurate I can give locations, but I have been out to the ranges to the east about 1-1.5 hours out, and another gorge park up north about 50 minutes)
What kind of gum, if anything specific? I was already looking in gum forests

https://files.shroomery.org/files/20-21/013455664-IMG_20200522_142347.jpg these are perfect areas.
Anything damp with gum tree bark. But you will need to cover big areas as they can be scattered all over.
Go hiking, get some music, water and enjoy an outing adventure.
I go past Mount Macedon in Vic.

Maybe try find areas where the bush meets a clearing, with bracken fern and gum trees, dance around the outskirts of the clearing where the ferns and gums begin. Finding subs deep in forests is possible but they can be few and far between.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22172072 This guide basically says the same kind of stuff and has some great habitat shots for subs, notice how they are usually small clearings with scattered ferns and bush, surrounded by gum forests. Look in and around the ferns and bushes as the mushrooms can often grow out of the direct sunlight.

Maybe I have just been very unlucky after all... I went over thousands of mushrooms though, just feels so unlikely.
I do enjoy it, it is hardly a chore, just feels frustrating thinking you're doing the right thing and it not coming through.
I'll try a few more times, thanks

Always ID the ones you find on here, post the photos to us... dont want to eat some strophs or gallerinas.

Seems like suburbs is the way to go. You'll find them eventually! Yeah, you don't want galerinas. Some stropharias are concidered good edibles, though. Does anyone know what the toxin in the alleged inedible/toxic species are?

If I'm not mistaken, Galerina Marginata are the main ones to be afraid of that look like subs -- amatoxins, so like kidney shutdown...

Yes, learn to know that one. Another look alike is leratiomyces ceres. But that one's not dangerous.

Yeah I found a ton of Leratiomyces ceres this morning (the red always gives them away to me I think), as well as many Marasmius oreades (white gills for that one seems to be the separating factor) but it's this one here that I keep seeing a lot of that really throws me... I can't differentiate the two at a glance and have no idea what it is

Colour of the cap, gills and stem are different.

Ok the stem now that you mention it is a lot whiter on the subs, but the cap and the gills I have a hard time differentiating still ><
here was a sub that I found a year or two ago:

the cap colour looks similar to me... I guess I'll just have to get a better eye for it

Oh, I was thinking l.ceres. Well, stem colour and bruising should be enough to distinguish between subs and agrocybes. You'll get to recognise them soon.
