Bought some green coffee beans * 2
    #26687019 - 05/22/20 01:08 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I've been thinking about doing this for a while now.
I'm a bit of a coffee snob ever since I discovered the amazing French Press.

Buying and roasting my own beans was the next logical step right?

Now, let me say this:
I don't drink coffee every day.
It's more of a treat for me. I like the taste more so than the effects.
So, I decided to go ahead and watch a few videos on roasting your own beans and bought a three-pound bag.

My first batch was ok.

Better than store-bought, but not by a lot.

I decided to go for a darker roast my second (and most recent) batch.

Wow, what a difference.
This is some smooth coffee.
I've never experienced anything like this, simply amazing.
Since this is like any other cooking adventure, I'm bound to get better with practice.

You can see the oils on the beans.
It looks wet, but that's not water
I've never seen store-bought beans that looked like this:

I can't wait for my next roast.

:leocheers:

On the stovetop.

I started with this method here

My main issue is I'm using a shitty electric stove.
The elements pulse, and won't maintain a steady heat.

I really want a flame to roast them with.
It gives a far more consistent heat then this POS here.

I may look into getting a decent camp stove.
One would think the roasting process would smell good.
Well, it doesn't and may set your smoke alarm off, if not properly vented.

Having an outside cooker would be easier, give better results, and won't smoke up the house.

Yes, the darker the roast, the more flavor is released but more caffeine is lost too.

Lighter roasts have a higher caffeine content.

I'm in it for the taste, so I'm going for a dark roast.

The beans go through two "pops" or "cracks". The first pop is the skin breaking loose from the bean. It has a skin similar to the one on raw peanuts. They are thick and bitter. You have to sift them out once you're done roasting them. It will break away from the bean first. Later it will go through a second pop. That's the bean itself cracking open so more of the oils can be released.

That's what I'm looking for, real dark, oily beans.

I would have thought roasting would make your place smell like a coffee house.

Here is the one I just finished.
It's more of a medium, blond roast

I'm playing around with different pans. This one sucked. It wouldn't hold heat worth a shit. You can see the difference in color. Some are medium, others are almost blond. It took me 40 minutes of stirring to get this roast. My dark, delicious roast only took 20.

I really need to get a camp stove ...

What kind of pan u got? I have a cast iron pan which hold the heat very well and balanced. I think roasting on that would just be a matter of finding the right temp for the right time.

Those dark beans were roasted in a cast-iron skillet on an induction stovetop.
I didn't have a soft whisk and ended up scraping all the seasoning off of it.
You have to keep the beans constantly moving to insure an even cook, a wisk was recommended in all videos.

My main issue at the moment is a decent source of heat and a pan to go with it.
I could get a dutch oven just for roasting beans in I guess.
It should work well with any heat source.

The medium (40 fucking minute) roast was with a thick stainless steel pan on the electric stove-top. I stirred it for 10-15 minutes on high heat and it never got above boiling. I need temps in the 350-375f range so, I switched over to a different stainless steel pan with a thin bottom. The only issue with it was, it kept on doing its own little pop every now and then, spraying beans all over the stove.

It's a learning process to be sure lol.

I've done both medium and dark roasts and they all have their own distinct flavor.
They also have another thing in common, smoothness.
I've never had a coffee so silky smooth in my life.

:themoreyouknow:

I highly recommend giving this a try for any coffee junkies out there.

I want to get into drinking coffee from beans instead of the processed granulated instant stuff.
How the hell do I go about doing that? So many machines not sure what I'm looking for.... just buy a "french press" from Amazon??

You can get a french press at your local Wal-Mart for about $20

Just using a french press on store-bought coffee will show a drastic improvement in taste ...

Especially if you've been drinking instant coffee :projectile:

Roasting your own green beans can be done at home on your stovetop. You just need a decent pan and a reliable source of heat. That is my issue at the moment, finding the best pan to use on this P.O.S. electric stove. I may end up getting an open-flame camp stove and a special pan just for roasting these beans. Because it does produce a lot of smoke. The place I'm staying at now has an attic fan and does an adequate job of sucking the smoke out of here, but it leaves behind a distinctive burnt smell that lingers for a couple of days.

I tried this a year or so back, I found that sometimes the roasting of the coffee made me more jittery than drinking the coffee itself! It's not really worth the effort for me since there's a sick bean dispensary near me that gets top notch coffee and roasts it themselves. The only downside is that they use paper bags, but it shouldn't be a problem now that I've got myself a vacuum sealer.

Why don't you use a plastic spatula instead? I'm sure it'll work out fine and won't harm your cast iron cookware. I don't suggest pan tossing them, you'll just get bean husks every where, it's super messy.

I still have some green beans laying around from back then, I doubt they're any good any more, but I might as well give it a try tomorrow. I'm trying to limit my amount of caffeine and I've already had my day's coffee.

Have you tried those mocha stove top machines? They're the equivalent of a cheap home espresso machines, they're worth a shot! The only downside is the sediment (same as a french press, really) but it can be solved by cutting out a coffee filter and putting it between the machines metal one and the ground beans. Good stuff!

Here's the difference in size roasting makes and how the oils get released.

They swell up quickly, that's the second pop, and also what allows all the extra oils and flavor to get out.

I enjoy the challenge of home-made things.
I even have some home-made caramel sauce to add to this delicious coffee.

This is a learning process for me.
I went looking for a big rubber whisk, for this very reason.
The local Wally-World only had small ones so I have some saved to buy later on Amazon.
The hulls won't be an issue once I have the gear to do this outside.

I've never been a fan of espresso, nor do I like getting the coffee jitters, I just enjoy the taste of a good brew.

Home made is definitely better!

I'm not a fan of the jitters either, but you can make it as strong or as weak as you like and there are some pretty small ones out there. I brought it up because you seem to like stronger coffee flavors and that way of preparing it really brings them out.
