No success with rye berry spawn

So I have tried using rye berries for spawn 4 times now with no luck. All were with syringes from SporeStore so maybe that's it. First 3 syringes were clear with some black specks, I got them to send me some replacements that did have cloudy material. 2 of the attempts were with pre-sterilized mushroom bags kept in the dark at around 75 degrees. Maybe humidity wasn't right in the bags? 3rd attempt I followed directions found here and used the berries from the bags and soaked 24hrs, boiled 10 minutes, cooled, loaded jars, pasteurized 90 minutes, inoculated with 1-2 cc each, kept at 75 degrees in ambient light and nothing. Finally I got the replacement syringes and decided to try one of those. I went ahead and just re-pasteurized the jars 60 minutes and re-inoculuated with the new syringe and have kept in ambient light at 75 degrees for 5 days so far. I also tried BRF cakes once and didn't get anything. Do you find dark or light is more successful? Should the berries be dry when you load the jars to pasteurize? I read not to use heat pad but is a space heater ok? I have read every feed I can find on here about spawn, is there a foolproof technique? My first run using wild bird seed without sunflower seeds and straw in the jars that a friend told me about actually did work. Switch to wheat berries? Hard or soft? Oh and I have not had any problems with contaminants at all.

i don't think you're supposed to mention the name of specific suppliers in posts due to the illegality of some aspects of our hobby...i might be wrong though, but i was encouraged to remove supplier name from a post not long ago.
regarding your problems with syringe inoculation of grain, i've had some similar issues--i'm giving agar a try on my next attempt (tons of great resources on using agar on the site)--and tons of members with experience to help. good luck

Rubiks - I saw an entire feed about SporeStore sending bogus syringes, that's why I mentioned it.

That’s so stupid, I don’t get why anybody would make fake syringes. They’re legal and cheap as shit.
Idk if you’re just mixing up terms but if you pasteurized the grain that would be a problem. Should be sterilized.
I’d start doing agar if you’re having this much trouble, then you’ll know if the syringes are good and can also get clean myc.
You could use brf to make a paste instead too.

I might be confused but besides the syringes- which do not need visable spores- and all the good advice already given, it sounds like you might be messing with your grains too much. If I am reading this right you purchased a bag of sterilized rye grains that were already cooked and pressure cooked, then opened the bags and soaked the already soaked and pressure cooked grains again and "pasteurized" the grains for 90 minutes..... And then "pasteurized" again for 60 minutes before innoculating?

It may be that you're just not supposed to talk about actual sponsors in mush cult posts

Well with out agar or a microscope there is no way to tell if the syringes are good or bad so I wouldn't admit you bought spore syringes for microscopy purposes and tried to grow mushrooms with them using bad technique.
Get some fresh whole oats or wheat berries. Properly prepare them I have a link in my signature. Sterilize them for 2 hrs in a PC and use agar to inoculate them.
Better luck next time I guess. I am willing to bet it isn't the syringes though.

Shooting spores into rye berries(grains) is a gamble. I highly suggest getting into agar if you want good results. All your ?'s are answered here along with some good agar pointers. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24297804

herbnmyco - thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I'll just try BRF cakes next time unless I can pressure cook at the appropriate PSI in my Instant Pot. I think the spawn and bulk substrate technique sounds more fun than the cakes and SGFC though. Has anyone used cakes in bulk substrate like coco coir or manure? I saw a post that one guy shredded them with a cheese grater and it worked. I appreciate the feedback.
