Halos are not necessarily a mold. They're almost guaranteed to happen on germination plates and early transfers.

If you want to test if halo is myc or mold, take transfer from a halo.

Just going with my experience, but all of my halos are mold. I have never seen a halo of myc in my cultures, and I look intensely for everything, with bright lights and lots of magnifying gadgets. But like Roger C. said, my agar is always stuff, so that may play a part.
And I did absolutely isolate my halo into a beautiful clear, shiny plate of mold.

That’s interesting knight. I’ve definitely seen pictures of plates where I couldn’t identify a halo, though without having it in hand who knows if it’s real tiny. On all my plates though you can clearly tell it is no different than the main body of mycelium, just thinner. Except in those cases where it’s got the chaotic area, they obviously look a lil different.

And speaking of that I have a plate that almost makes devil horns in one area of chaotic outer ring myc and after transferring, once I got about a quarter sized growth, the same devil horn pattern emerged. I’ve just been staring and wondering. I even tried asking what it was while I was on mushrooms:lol: I’m going to try grabbing some to see what it do.
