What method to do with loads of brown rice
#26684348 - 05/20/20 09:29 PM (3 years, 8 months ago) |

so after my first successful pf tek i went and bought a shit load of brown rice and vermiculite . i didn't have good PC at the time so i thought its reasonable
But now i kinda want to move to bulk and don't really like doing cakes again
But now i have a PC and i don't want to buy other grains when i have shit ton of brown rice , i tried broke boi tek but the problem is they get sticky as hell and i only worked with agar wedges and i cant shake them , me trying to shake the whole brown rice jars (or in my case pp5 containers) always end up agar wedges stick to the top
So i'm asking whats the best way to use brown rice ? should i just do brf with verm and make a LC ? i hate LC cause you cant see whats going on
thanks in advance

You can eat it. If you have pets, you can make food for them with it. You can use it with agar. You could make cakes and take those to bulk with some clean LC.

Well i can't actually eat it since i'm on a keto diet so
I suppose doing LC is the only way?
Any way to do whole brown rice in bags? can i use agar on them? i don't see a lot of info on people using brown rice in bags but i was just wondering if it's possible? any tek out there?

Brown rice makes excellent spawn when properly hydrated.
Watch this video, except use your pc
I learned with brown rice as spawn. Cased brown rice is great too.
9er tek ,google that
And watch this first. Just use your pc rather than how he does in this link
And of course you can inoculate spawn any way. Brown rice is spawn when used like this.

Use a pot and boil the rice for a few minutes, he suggested 7. Rinse and dry. Use it like any other spawn.
You want the rice to be hydrated yet have enough toughness to handle pressure cooker without being sticky as hell. Rice is very sticky by nature, thats the PROBLEM with it. Bags work too.
I sent this only to let you see that rice can be used as spawn or fruiting substrate.
Prepare it as any other grain spawn. It will have a bit of a learning curve ,just like anything.
It can be used successfully as spawn.
A 5-6 hour soak works great too.
Get some easier to deal with grain bro, make like easier.

I cook mine for ~20 min and then stop-cook with cold water and rinse until it doesn't feel starchy. Lots of rinsing. Truly a fantastic spawn save for the cost of brown rice per pound and all the rinsing. If it was under 15 oer 50lb, it'd be one of my go-to grains. Fast AF to colonize IME. That said... grind a bit and hang onto it. You'll surprise yourself at some point and want to make somoe cakes again (they have their place if you know how to use them to your advantage. Spores to clone in a jifffy pete. (*twirls 6-guns)
Edit: to clarify, I start the clock when I turn the burner on, not after a boil. Also... when you're out of agar for some reason (month wait on my order this time... Derp) you can make brf paste and keep cruising.

I wouldn't suggest using brown rice on its own as spawn.
The only way you really want to do bulk without a PC is by using BRF cakes and breaking them up to use as spawn. You don't have to wait for them to consolidate first, just use them as soon as they are colonized.
Never make LC without inoculating it with a clean agar culture.

Works fine. Shake just fine. All brown rice is not equal. Some I cook a little less, but I've also left it on for a full 30, and gave it a good multiple rinses (this is absolutely key, plus good drying on paper towel helps) with zero issues. Quote:

Why? Works superb. Used it hundred of times. It's expennsive and comparitively labor-intensive given said cost but makes killer spawn. No reason not to save for what I mentioned. Also you can absolutely steam whole brown rice. Just do two hours. Doesn't matter since OP has a PC now, but worth noting.

I wouldn't suggest it because there are so much better options

He's asking what to do with what he has. He didn't say he has plans to reinvest. I agree there are better options and said so (and why). Really does work well though if you prep it well. Colonizes like a beast in a side-by-side. Definitely better options though. As soon as OP runs through that brown goodness, I'm sure he'll go grab some WBS or rye or whatever and move on...

Maybe trade on the Marketplace
If i were you, i would make PF cakes (its not that hard) and do cakes to bulk using a grain of your choice (like Rye Grass Seed).

Whole brown rice is my go to spawn at the moment. I've not got easy access to the other more popular grains at the moment and for some reason bird seed just doesn't work for me. I usually simmer the rice for 10-12 mins. Keep an eye on it as you don't want it anywhere near edible. I take it off the heat and rinse in cold water to stop the cooking.
Then I usually allow them to sit in the collandar for 15-20 toss that into a mixing bowl with a few handfuls of verm to absorb any excess moisture, jar then PC for two hours and it's good to go once cool. If possible I shake while still warm or once cool the next morning.
