Hello,
This monotub began on 5-7-2020. A friend used brf cakes and used a spawn ratio of about 1:2. A friend's first time. Nervous about what the condition of the tub and any advice.

Well something is growing. It looks a little dry. How do you have your mono set up? Polyfill, micropore tape, unmodified?
That middle pic looks like glass I'm not sure what I'm seeing there. But there's no contamination that I can immediately see.
How did you prep your coir what tek did you follow?

The friend roughly followed this tek. The tub is clear plastic. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15998565/fpart/all/vc/1
Though things have been made challenging due to COVID-19. There is currently tape covering the holes in the monotub. A small hole was found in corner that the tape was not covering. My friend thinks this might be why the tub got dried out.
Boiling water to clean then letting cool before misting lightly the sides of the top.
Thoughts or suggestions?

tbh thats 14 days it should be starting to happen right about now. Ask your friend to touch the substrate and tell you how wet or how dry it is.....but trying to adjust moisture content mid flight is not great. adding some is easier than removing some.

By touching it how will they determine how wet or dry it is?
Will a simple poke suffice? Do not want to disturb the substrate too much by grabbing some to test field capacity.
Thoughts/suggestions welcome!

If it was field capacity there's no sense in grabbing some.
It's difficult to tell what the problem may be if any. Could just be slow weak genetics, could be fighting contams, could just need a long time, could be not getting proper gas exchange, could be drying out.
Really all you can do is wait and watch.

That looks way dry.
The myc that is there looks ok though, could just be slow from dryness/that particular culture.

How long should my friend wait before testing with some misting? Will it take more than another week you think?
There was a small hole in the tape for the first two weeks that may have allowed for drying in the tub. This has been patched.

It looks pretty colonized I bet if you mist it you’ll see knots in a day or two.
Just don’t soak it. Spray a few sprays across it from a couple feet over so it rains down into the surface.
You want super tiny beads like this.

Okay my friend is going to do as Aka suggested with a clean bottle and boiled water. He will post pics afterwards and updating after a few days.

As you can see the monotub has recovered beautifully after misting once a day for back to back days with no fanning. That was about three or four days ago and this is the tub tonight. Misting works!
