Now, I have a statement for you!

Your @ss needs to offer up some seeds of all your varieties on the market place, so I can trade you something for them

sure, I'll probably end up with lots of extra seeds assuming my pods don't rot from the insane rains we've been getting this year.

Let me know if you decide to

Talk about rain!

We got probably a whole three years worth of rain, in just a few months!

I mean, it rains nearly every day, and it shows no signs of ever stopping!

I put this years rains right up with living in Central Florida, where it rained every single day straight for three months during the summer that I lived there, and it never missed a beat, and the Rain forest!

I found four plants still alive and maybe about three inches long. Is it normal for these things to not seem very well rooted in to the ground?

Yes, poppies have a pretty shallow root system.

Mine are barely in the ground. Falling over. Roots like a snake on ground. I tried to gently put soil on and underneath the other side to hold it up.
They only get half days sun too.

Yeah mine are attached to the ground with a little string. There’s no way they could get much bigger without falling over. There’s absolutely no support.

They don't need support guys, they will correct themselves.
Don't try to mess with them by propping them up, or burying part of the stem under the soil to support them, or you will stunt their growth.

just leave them alone. let them grow. As Allium said, don’t try to prop them up or anything like that.

That’s probably how I killed the other ones. I added some soil around them.

Why didn’t anyone tell me

This is how i grow poppies. works every single year and has produced plants almost 7 feet tall this year. proven to work in north florida, california, north carolina and virginia
1. put seeds on the soil
2. water if there is a dry spell
3. thin if the plants are too close together
-no fooling around with the plants
-no fertilizers required
whenever i see people having trouble with poppies its almost always because they planted at the wrong time for their climate, or they’re trying to baby them and take care of them like an exotic ornamental. i’ve seen people trying to germinate seeds on paper towels, use humidity domes, bury the seeds, etc... don’t do any of that shit.

The first time I grew poppies I was wondering about that too and had the same thoughts....They looked so damn "floppy" & loose & frail. They didn't look to be "secured" to the ground properly at all with that little string-like root dangling out from the base of the plant lol. They didn't "look right" laying over on their sides with no upright support and flopping around in the wind. I've never grown or seen another plant that grows all "loose & floppy" with a "loose root" like that lol.

...but that's just how they do it, they look & grow like that for a little while once they're a bit past the seedling stage and have some true leaves, eventually they'll start to look a lot more secure/robust and explode in their growth.

I was trying to think about what purpose/advantage that has?...Like why did the plant evolve to grow all floppy like that with that "loose" root during one of its stages/phases of growth? I couldn't think of anything in particular?...Maybe something to do with wind? Maybe it helps the plant to be oriented a certain way with the prevailing winds in the area it grows, or to build a strong root/stalk against the prevailing winds? I dunno  .

They do seem like fragile plants in general, at least when they're young, but I've found them to be easy to grow the past 3 years that I've done so. Only troubles I've had so far is trying to sow the seed too late in the spring time, I suspected it was the warm temps but it was likely because I couldn't keep the seeds/ground consistently moist enough for germination. When I've tossed seeds out in January or Feb, like I did this year, I had a very high germination rate.

If one lives where there is a lot of heavy rain there is the issue of seeds being "washed away" from the spot they were sowed...and I've seen ants clear out and remove 1000's of seeds within a few hours from a spot I sowed...slugs & snails like to munch on the seedlings...but once they're growing with a few sets of true leaves and are no longer "floppy", then they're pretty hardy plants and quickly on their way to bolting upwards.
