Growing throughout forest in Northeastern Nebraska. No scent. Rather hard.

Cut it in half. If it's zoned inside then it's a Daldinia (it probably is). If it's not zoned then it's a Hypoxylon. Both genera are close relatives of Xylaria.

Here is the cut for this specimen. Definite rings. Is this something youd be interested in at the Herbarium? Found in Ponca State Park, Nebraska.

Daldinia childiae, which is the US version of D. concentrica. Doctorghosty called it.

It's pretty common, so we don't really need it. But keep looking for things.
