I need help working out the kinks.

Hey friends. I stopped trying to grow a while ago after a few tubs in a row had to be thrown out. Now I'm back in, and I'm trying some new things. For the most part, my firs tub has been doing great, but there are just a few things I'm unsure about.

A few of my fruits are growing kind of funny. In a few, the stipe appears wider at the top, and the cap is small. In some of them, the tip of the stipe is really thin (with small caps).

I think one of my original problems was Co2 (not enough FAE), so I messed around with the micropore tape when it was time to start the fruiting process and made little downward-facing gaps. I also made sure the temperature was consistent this time around.
Maybe this is due to not enough or too much light exposure? I've been leaving the closet door open during the day so that it gets a few hours of indirect sunlight.
A friend said that my casing layer (which is a new thing I'm trying) might be too thick. In the pictures, the mycelium is taking over the casing, and continues today (these pictures are 2-3 days old).

Another small question I had is: I see some people saying that you should harvest them before their veils rupture. But then there are a lot of people with pictures of AMAZING flushes, and pretty much all the veils are ruptured. Is there a difference, is it recommended, does it matter, why, etc. ?

If you see anything else that you think might be worth mentioning about the pictures, let me know. Thanks!

That casing layer is really un level. You want it to be as flat as possible. It also looks very very dry. It could be that you have some different coir than I’m used to.

Harvesting is personal preference. A lot of those you picked could have gone a bit longer. I sometimes like to get them right before the veil breaks or as it’s breaking. Like the cap is opening up a bit. Letting them open is fine too you just don’t want to let them drop spores all over the place. It’s messy and doesn’t taste good. And mushrooms just start adding water weight at some point (probably after they open fully, a guess) so you’re not getting any extra dry weight or active chemicals but you are using up more water from your substrate and probably energy to pull that water in.

I would also use scissors or a scalpel or sharp knife to harvest. Pulling them out like that roughs up the surface and you get that clunky stuff at the bottom of the mushroom that makes the stomach especially unhappy.

:whathesaid:
All that, needs a more flat surface and dry af. Make sure you nail down field capacity.

I meant for this response to be to Roger Clemency. Sorry, I am still trying to figure this website out.

Thank you, this is really good advice. I've been misting it twice a day, I think the picture I took was right before misting it again, but I have had problems with moisture. Any advice on how to keep the moisture in without sacrificing FAE?
I will definitely keep the substrate in mind for my next tub. You're absolutely right, it is very uneven. I was trying not to get substrate on the micropore tape on the holes at the bottom (which were cut way too low) so I mounded it toward the center. Maybe what I should have done is split this tub into two.
And the last bit is also great advice. I will start cutting them and not pulling them. I was just thinking about the leftover coco coir on the bases and how that was going to be a pain to get off. Thank you so much.

To LadysKnight:
I think I accidentally deleted my response  If I did, here's my response again:
I swear I had field capacity- I even thought I had a little too much moisture when putting it together. But I have the same problem with keeping moisture content consistent with my snake's enclosure. Maybe I should invest in a couple of auto-misters?

Its dry because you have way too many holes in that tub.  If that's a 50-60 qt tub then 6 total 1-1.5 inch holes is plenty.  You can close a few of those and you will get plenty of FAE still without having to mist much.

Thank you, I will try that and tape some of those up.

I would probably tape over those two big holes on the tops of the long sides, and the middle hole on the bottom of the long sides.

My normal setup is (2) x 1.5” holes right about sub level on both long sides. I put these a couple inches in from each end. And then (1) x 2” hole up high on both of the short ends.
