Is it passable to use coco coir as a casing layer without anything else?  Has anyone ever done this with good results?

Yes, I?ve got good results that way, but IME is better mixing it with some verm and buffering lightly with whatever you like best. I prefer to fill up a mister with some alkali water (water+lime) then moisten the coir/verm mix with the limed water. I let it sit some hours then the ph is tested till I get a neutral/slightly alkali-basic reading (7-7,8ph). Then sterilize.
Some prefer to add some oyster shells to the verm/coir. Try whatever you like best and have fun while doing it

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.

I'm going 4 casing, I always go 4 the 40/60 mix but my verm is tacking 4ever to come so I'm just going 4 coir.

coco coir rarely contaminates and it is by far the best casing when mixed with verm alone. the pH is fine without the introductin of lime, etc.
