Will I ever get high again?
    #26679505 - 05/18/20 05:59 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

For about the last 6 years I have been taking anti-psychotics. I have taken many different kinds, but am currently taking clozapine, perphenazine and lithium. These drugs seem to heavily weaken the effects of psychedelics/hallucinogens. The effects of marijuana are insubstantial (even large amounts of marijuana/concentrate have little effect). Mushrooms have little to no effect. I was even able to come across a tab of LSD (a small amber colored square about 2cm x 2cm) which provided nothing but a slight body high about an hour after dosing.

I remember my first time eating mushrooms (before I took medication). It was a whole different world.

Will I ever get high again?

While on those medications  I dou t you will. Lithium is a powerful drug.

I don't recommend stopping your meds to trip if they are helping you live a normal life.

Medication (SSRIs) that prevented me from tripping was all the motivation I needed to do my research, to get off the medications. It took me 5 months, the withdrawal was hell, but it was worth it, to be able to reach that psychedelic headspace again.

The after glow means you’re buzzing for days sometimes weeks after just one dose. Now compare that to your daily medications, and your daily side effects.

I wish you luck

It's a big decision to come off meds, but often a good one.  Many mood "disorders" can be nipped in the butt by a surprisingly mild combination, such as magnesium, calcium, and green tea.

But even if you find something natural that helps you, I recommend anyone with a history of trouble mostly stay in the 50-100mic range.  You can explore 150-250, but much less often, and expect a few rough experiences especially at the grinding 2nd half of the experience.

Probably not on drugs literally designed to combat psychosis (hallucinations) – remember weed is technically a psychedelic

you can probably still get high on other types of drugs, but those are bad for you

Two of those drugs are used to treat schizophrenia. People that have issues or a family history of mental health issues such as schizophrenia shouldn't use psychedelics. Lithium, the third drug, seems to be targeted at treating bi-polar disorder and controlling mania/suppressing random violent outbursts. You should really discuss your desire to take mind altering hallucinogens with your doctor...

This forum is about harm reduction so I would strongly recommend discussing this issue with your doctor.

It's fairly easy for people to get prescribed powerful psych drugs nowadays without a real need for them.  I had that happen, I was in a bad relationship, job sucked, mentioned to my doc I was depressed.  He prescribed Lexapro, it caused me to develop anxiety. I was handed off to a psychiatrist, he prescribed all sorts of crap.  Over the course of a few years, it all got worse.  I didn't even feel alive anymore.  At the urging of friends and family, I quit. It took a couple years to get back to normal. I lost a decade of my life.

You won't get a normal response to drugs or life when on mood altering psyche meds.

The drugs prescribed to dr_quantum is used to treat pretty serious mental disorders. Psychedelics are generally a no-go for anyone who's very depressed, has schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is a bit of a risk as well. Questions regarding a mix of these disorders and psychedelics are pretty conclusive. You know yourself best, just remember that a lot of people have had bad experiences and it's not recommended.

There are quite a few posters in here with BPD who all report immense alleviation of their symptoms after psilocybin use :cookiemonster:

And also many recent studies looking to treat people suffering extreme depression with psilocybin :cookiemonster:

The problem is coming off the anti-depressant medication, not the psilocybin.

Yeah, I was wrong. Shrooms can be good against depression and in some cases bipolar. But it can still dangerous. His advice and recommendations just came of as a bit nonchalant and ignorant. The problem is not the psilocybin, coming of the medications or whatever disorders he/she has. It's giving advice that could lead to something bad happening without recognizing the potential bad side effects.

I guess your 6 years ago self was getting too high, and maybe never allowing himself to come down.
Having sought professional help you are now on a regime that prevents getting high. completely.

Left to the professionals you will always be on a pill regime and hunky dory.

However, if there is nothing wrong with you, get help to wean from these antipsychotics, then spend a year straight before dabbling in chemical-insanity and inebriation.

That's my opinion 6 years is a long time to be on that stuff.

I would not explain to anyone that your interest is to resume psychedelics, they will not assist that desire. Meantime while weaning, ask yourself why you want to do psychs again, and if you ever do, try to keep your dosage down and avoid extremes.

The question asked here has several answers: yes, no, maybe. We weren't asked about weaning one self off.

but if not weaned from antipsychotic meds, he won't ever get high, this is not complicated.

Don't do anything anyone here says unless they are part of your health care team. My little brother tried different things he heard from different people all the time to treat his mental health issues. He's dead now & there's no coming back from that.

that's maybe related to your brother's particular story, but you are 100% right.

The O.P.'s Health Care should call the shots on getting off medication. In some cases, the person doesn't want to get off his medication - in those cases, he wouldn't do recreational drugs at all.
