Continued growth without restarting?
    #26680108 - 05/19/20 12:35 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello, novice shroom grower here!
A couple months ago I started my journey with a kit I had purchase online, and since then the first flush was amazing. I re-dunked all my cakes and was able to only get little yield with my second flush. What’s weird is that there was this blackish powder inside my container and I was wondering where it could have come from? Also, this flush was weird because the colors of the top of the cap were a little more dull and they easily fell off when trying to cultivate them. Is this a bad sign at all? (See pic) Anyways, back to my point. I was wondering if there was any way I could continue my growths and flushes without expending my cakes completely? I’ve seen pics of people have one big piece of substrate (I believe that’s the term, correct me if I’m wrong) with a little forest of a bunch of shrooms going. I want to try to do something like that but I would really prefer to not have to restart the whole process over because it took like 6 weeks for anything to even happen in the first place. Is this possible at all? Do you guys have any recommendations or suggestions on how I can go about this in the right direction? Or maybe point me to where I can find this info? I’d appreciate it tremendously. Thanks.

There a couple things you can do:

1. Pop a cap off and make a spore print. Use the spore print to make a syringe or swab. From there, you can make more pf cakes and knock them up with your new syringe or you can put the syringe to agar.

2. You can clone one of your fruits there on agar.

Those are your options, and they'll definitely take at least 6 weeks if not more to see fruits, BUT if you do work with agar, go to grains, do g2g or LC, you can expand mycelium for a long time, so "starting over" won't take so long when you already clean culture stocked up.

The black powder is spores that your mushrooms dropped. Most of us harvest ours before the fruits mature to that point.
The cap color is fine.

After the first couple flushes you will get diminishing returns until the cakes are spent.

The kit you got gave you brown rice flour + vermiculite cakes to grow on. This is PF-Tek, a relatively simple way to grow mushrooms using a spore syringe.
If you want to continue to grow mushrooms from your kit, you can make a spore print and use it to make more syringes. BRF cakes are simple to make and can be steam sterilized without a pressure cooker.
I would suggest upgrading the fruiting chamber they gave you to a "Shotgun fruiting chamber or "SGFC".

The large substrates you are talking about is bulk growing, using grain spawn and a bulk substrate.
You will need to invest in a pressure cooker to do this.

Since you did this with a kit, you have to do a bit of research before your next grow.

Noone has invented a way to grow shrooms continously yet, sorry to say. All of us here that grow most of the time, stagger our grows to have a continuous supply. I keep "restarting" every week, that way I always have fungi growing at all the different stages of growth. It's not hard once you get into the groove, but for each new cake/tub you are making, you have to start the process from the beginning.

While big monotubs take a bit of practice and supplies to do right (like mushpunx mentioned) there's a way to dip your toes into bulk grows before that:

1. Follow a PF tek to make more BRF cakes like the ones you got in the kit, but skip consolidation and dunking after they're fully colonized
2. Prepare a coir substrate (look up a bucket tek)
3. Birth your colonized cakes and crumble or shred them into pieces
4. Mix with coir at a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 (spawn:coir)
5. Follow a shoebox tek, which uses the small 6qt plastic totes to fruit in

If you want to keep a steady supply coming with this method, you'd have to buy more half pint jars and keep them in a rotation. Though imo, if you get to the point of investing that much time into this project, you might as well look into agar.

I know I'm a fool, but that's why I keep trying to learn.

I also have some 3-year Cambodian prints to get rid of. DM me if interested
