I think torture is justified if it is for important information, and not sadistic pleasure.

Like if you are busted and the DEA wants to find your source?

Is it OK if we send Pamela Anderson over to extract some information?

there we run into another issue...

the type of information sought. a person has a right to keep certain things secret, but not others.

for instance, if you earned some money and stashed it away, you wouldn't have to tell anyone where you hid it, and any pressuring of you to tell where it was would be wrong. however, if you hid money that you had stolen, or a bomb perhaps, you could be pressured to divulge its location.

here's another example. imagine a free and sovereign country is attacked without reason by another nation. now... the defenders have a right to fight back, and they have a right to keep their secrets should they be captured. should they be captured, it would not be right to pressure them to divulge anything. it's not even right that they're being held captive or fought against. they've got a right to their defense and a right to the secrets they may be keeping.

it's not acceptable to force people to divulge secrets they've got a right to keep.

it gets rather hairy indeed.
