LC from D5%
    #26679560 - 05/18/20 06:24 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Wondering if anyone with access to medical supplies have tried sterile D5% bags as mediums for their LC and to what level of success.

No but could you describe what you think is the advantage to a more practical container? Yes you may want to especially modify it but at least you could magnetically stir a jar properly

Hypotheticals analysis could give some insight as to whether it's worthwhile to even try.

The advantage is availability. I have said bags on hand and would save from having to mix the solution and sterilize it. It's essentially premixed pre-sterilized solution

OK, well it dextrose is the only thing it contains that can be limiting because fungi also need micronutrition and things like nitrogen to grow.

Dextrose is only a carbon source. The deficiency of the rest will be the limiting factor.

Then it depends what you inoculate with and how much micronutrition you pass along with the inoculant.

So it should generally be expected to work a little but not well. I like needle biopsy which does not inoculate with much matter at all, its just a little myc, no real reserves. It would work a lot better if you inoculate with a decent quantity of other LC that comes with micronutrition but i guess the whole point is you wanna make that LC.

Still, means you can expand differently made LC into D5W

I’ve used 500ml D5 bags to make liquid culture with quite a bit of success. They are really quick and easy to use, and at least in the case of the edibles I was cultivating, I ended up with more clean LC than I could use in reasonable amount of time. I think I ended up drawing up some syringes to give to friends.

I shot LC of shiitake, blue oyster, lion’s mane, and rieshi into 500ml D5 bags. All grew pretty well hanging in my closet. I would shake the bag, and draw out to use to inoculate grain jars. Having sealed sterile bags makes clean growing easier. It’s not necessary, but I had access to bags for free. I don’t think they would be worth the cost if I were buying them.

I agree and am in the same position of having the opportunity and convenience of them.
