Gymnopilus junonius? If so, when should I harvest?
    #26676516 - 05/17/20 09:10 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Found in SW England growing on a tree stump on a heathland.

Weather is basically summer here. No distinct smell, other than that of a mushroom.

I think it's a laughing gym. If so, how many days should I wait before harvesting?

Happy Sunday all!

Gymnopilus junonius. I see no bruising and European g. junionus is usually inactive. However, if you want to try, you should harvest them now.

Alan recently posted a very interesting post including a new paper on this topic.

As quoted from the other thread:

One striking finding is that Gymnopilus junonius does not occur in North America, and is not psychoactive.  It occurs in Europe, Australia and South America, solving the mystery of why European big laughing gyms consistently fail to cause laughter.

Cheers man! Finally got that sorted. Awesome news.
Ok, Merryshroomer, gymnopilus junionus is not magic. Nothing to keep unless you like the taste.

Well at least Alan himself doesn't fail to cause laughter!

Thanks for the info and the link, Anglerfish. I had read a few reports about 'disappointing' laughing gyms, it's good to see somebody's found some factual evidence.

That's a shame, although I was sceptical when I saw there was no staining. Then again, I've read reports of people taking non-staining gyms and tripping hard. I also read that junonius gives a different experience to that of other common actives, even though it contains the same substance.

I'm keeping my eye on them for when they break their veils so I can harvest and get a spore print. Re edibility, I read it's quite bitter, so am guessing it's not a choice edible?

No, it's not concidered edible. Well, try them. You should pick them as young as possible. According to this new information, no one has ever  tripped on gymnopilus junonius, but rather on closely related species.
Several species of gymnopilus does contain other alkaloids than psilocybe and panaeolus species, gymnopilin, hispidine, bis-noryangin etc. Wether these alkaloids occur in gymnopilus species without psilocybin, I have no idea.
