What makes P.Semilanceata thrive
    #26678156 - 05/18/20 04:12 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

What makes the P.Semilanceata prosper?
There have been loads of Liberty caps lately and some places they grow like crazy and other places they are scarce.

Is it the moisture levels?

Low temperatures?

What do you think?

Thanks

I reckon you're in New Zealand since you're asking about this species at this time of year.

As with all mushroom species, they will appear where there is food available for them.
Being saprobic (i.e. consumers of dead plant material), Psilocybe semilanceata lives
a somewhat "nomadic" existence, hence it needs to "move" around in order to survive.

So, in addition to the mentioned factors, the supply of nutrients is crucial. My own impression
is that they will fruit more regularly in well manured fields, albeit in medium numbers. Yet, if
the conditions are favourable they will have long fruiting seasons in these areas.

When they appear temporarily in certain locations, they sometimes seem to produce in overwhelming
numbers for one season, then retract substantially or disappear altogether the next season.

When in season here where I live (Norway) I try to take notes of important data - conditions, location, numbers,
size, time of year etc. to somehow try and read patterns out of it, and the above is the closest I can get to
being somewhat predictable. However, seemingly random factors are at play, so it is not easy to tell.

Thanks for the great response
Bang on with the country prediction!

I have found they do well in sports fields that were quite damp, maybe they are feeding off of dog droppings? Or possibly its because the grass is regularly cut and left to decompose..

Im very keen to check a livestock paddock now and make some comparisons

Thanks again for the informative response
