Identification request
    #26677759 - 05/17/20 09:07 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat:
I caught these growing in some St Augustine grass where a tree had grown years ago. SE Texas.

Gills:
The gills were nearly white and fairly firm.

Stem:
The stem was nearly white as well. It was thick, fibrous and "splintered"a bit when broken.

Cap:
The caps were around 30-35mm or 1.25". They were spongy and broke with definition.

Spore print color:
Sorry. Didn't get this.

Bruising:
I didn't see much as far as bruising.

Welcome to da Shroomery!

Very nice ID request.
I'm a noobling, but your picture and description makes me think they might be
the ringless honeymushroom, armillaria tabescens.

Wait for more experienced members!

:raisemyglass:

(Spore print color: the color of the spores. Determined by a "print", where you
take cap and put it upside down on tin foil or paper. Then you wait for a few
hours for the spores to get deposited on the chosen media. Then you check the color of this deposited layer of spores, the "print")

I think these are a bit small for Armillaria tabescens, The gills are close together and the stipe doesn't look right either. I think these are something like Gymnopus

These Mushrooms Seem To Have Decurrent Gills That Run Partially Down The Stipes. I'm Not Aware Of A Gymnopus Sp With Gills Such As These.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the late response. I went back to get more photos, but the heat must have gotten to them. I did notice that they were growing on the roots of an oak tree that had been cut down.

After looking at photos of both, I agree with Zen and Seph that these look more like armillaria tabescens than Gymnopus, unfortunately. These did not have the ring around the stem and the gills do look different.

Again, thanks for the feedback, nonetheless.

Those are also Armillaria. You can tell because it's growing straight from an exposed root, and Armillaria spp. are parasitic upon living tree roots-- also known as Armillaria "root rot."
