It's been a while since i've watched this movie. Only now am i appreciating the character development throughout the movie. There's lots of examples of this, one being how early on he feebly throws a stick to impale a fish. Later the movie shows him throw and hit first time from a distance.
In one scene he prepares to commit suicide but doesn't go through with it after his suicide device fails on a test dummy. Not much follow up occurs regarding this event except for a fairly unimportant scene where Hanks climbs back up there to reclaim the rope.
The movie end with Tom Hanks being rescued and delivering parcels that washed ashore to him from the plane that crashed at the beginning. It's not a bad ending to be honest. It implies Tom Hanks getting closure and getting over his hardship. I propose that the movie should have ended differently. Personally i think a much better ending would have seen Hanks beings saved like he was but after acknowledging his own pseudo-funeral and dealing with his wife moving on and how society continued onward so willingly he eventually hangs him self as there's nothing left for him in in society any more. The reason why this would be a better ending than what was delivered is because it would be heart breaking for one. Not all good endings are happy endings, take Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet for example. It would also be more consistent with the movie's setup. Throughout the film Hanks is consistently shown failing as he embarks on new ideas and later shown succeeding with style to display character growth. Hanks failed in suicide once. It would be a true testament to irony if the film had have continued this setup and have Hanks kill himself only after he finally found his way back to civilisation.

Another good ending would be instead of killing himself if Tom Hanks got the COVID-19 delivering those last few packages and choked to death on his own lung fluids.

People dont want to see the person they are rooting for die, thats why it like never happens in mainstream movies, but I personally loved the end of The Mist

For real, Hanks should have rolled up with some dime, sold his story and got some backing and gone straight baller. Then his x wife who bailed on him hangs herself. Credits roll...

He should have become obscenely rich, buying his own uninhabited island and live out his days there
Get a new Wilson
